The Nightly Show’s Larry Wilmore decided to forego his regular panel segments last night to conduct his first one-on-one interview with Mayor Bill de Blasio. The extended discussion included questions from “real New Yorkers” about issues like income inequality and homelessness before ultimately arriving at the mayor’s “beef” with the NYPD.
“Is it like a West Coast, East Coast thing right now?” Wilmore asked de Blasio.
“No, thank God,” the mayor answered, saying he’s been working hard to get everyone “on the same page” after the killing of Eric Garner.
Wilmore brought up the criticism de Blasio received after saying he worries the NYPD could hurt his biracial son (“Or, as I like to call him, your black son”).
“A young man of color in America today needs to have that conversation in his family, it’s something that everyone knows,” de Blasio said, insisting that he was in no way “disrespectful” to police, but instead just recognizing reality.
