Rex Tillerson Delivers Emotional Statement After Firing: ‘Proud of the Opportunity I’ve Had to Serve’
Rex Tillerson made a public statement this afternoon after being fired by President Trump.
After multiple reports over the past few months about tension between the President and Tillerson (most infamously the “moron” remarks), as well as reports that Trump wanted him out and replaced with successor Mike Pompeo, the President finally made the call.
Not only was Tillerson fired, but the State Department aide who made a statement about how Tillerson had no idea he was going to be fired was himself fired.
An emotional Tillerson said at his press conference that he received a call from President Trump around noon (hours after the President’s tweet on the news) and added, “What is most important is to ensure an orderly and smooth transition during a time that the country continues to face significant policy and national security challenges.”
He spent a lot of his speech thanking everyone he has worked with in the State Department, taking a moment to specifically encourage people working their to remain in their posts to “continue our mission.”
Tillerson touted some of the State Department’s accomplishments in the past year, talking about U.S. partners and “troubling” actions from Russia.
“Thank you for your devotion to a free and open society. To acts of kindness towards one another, to honesty and the quiet, hard work that you do every day to support this government with your tax dollars. All of us, we know, want to leave this place as a better place for the next generation. I’ll now return to private life, as a private citizen, as a proud American, proud of the opportunity I’ve had to serve my country. God bless all of you. God bless the American people. God bless America.”
