WATCH: Joe Biden Accepts the Democratic Nomination for President to Ovation and Kool & the Gang Music
Former Vice President Joe Biden officially accepted the Democratic presidential nomination, to an unprecedented virtual ovation and the strains of Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration.”
On Tuesday night’s second day of the Democratic National Convention, representatives from every state and territory cast their votes for the party’s presidential nod — and in one notable case, for calamari — with Biden’s home state of Delaware going last.
With Delaware’s 30 votes, Biden officially secured the nomination with 3,558 delegates to Senator Bernie Sanders’ 1,151, at which point a true sign of the coronavirus times took place: a virtual ovation to the aforementioned funk-pop anthem.
After several minutes of cheering intercut with shots of a smiling Biden family surprising the former VP by popping streamers, Rep. Bennie Thompson thanked the delegations, and said “Vice president Biden is hereby invited to deliver an acceptance speech.”
Biden kept it short and sweet.
“Thank you very, very much from the bottom of my heart,” he said. “Thank you all. It means the world to me and my family. And I’ll see you on Thursday. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Biden and prospective First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and the grandchildren celebrated for a few seconds more, before the convention continued. Biden will deliver his full convention speech on Thursday night.
