GB News appointed its first US correspondent Steven Edginton as the network looks to cover the upcoming presidential election and expand coverage.
Edginton previously worked as a journalist for The Daily Telegraph and political blog Guido Fawkes before a stint at The Sun. Edginton’s also spent time as Chief Digital Strategist for the Brexit Party.
While working for the Brexit Party and as a freelance journalist, Edginton’s breakthrough came during an investigation of the Civil Service after a “trusted source” showed him private diplomatic cables that became the basis of a scoop published in the Mail On Sunday. The cables revealed UK ambassador Sir Kim Darroch criticising then-President Donald Trump’s government as “inept.”
Due to his political association at the time he chose not to take a by-line and described the story as an “honest journalistic endeavour.” The reporting resulted in Darroch’s resignation.
Of his new role, Edginton said in a press release: “I’m thrilled to join GBNA at such an exciting period in US politics. I plan to cover underreported stories impacting millions of Americans. We will go where other broadcasters dare not to, and we will not shy away from controversial issues.”
The move by GB News is seen as a major play by the broadcaster to entrench itself as a formidable force in the US digital arena, just weeks after host Nigel Farage landed an exclusive interview with former President Trump, the Republican Party’s presidential candidate. Edginton’s appointment also comes on the heels of GB News’ digital launch of GBN America.
Geoff Marsh, GB News’ chief digital officer, said of the move: “America has always been our biggest market outside the UK, both with British expatriates but also with Americans who value our British perspective on events there.”
Of Edginton, he added: “Steven is key to helping us develop GBN America into a truly competitive player in the world’s biggest digital market with his hard-hitting stories across multiple platforms. He’s an outstanding and hugely versatile journalist whose agenda-setting exclusive stories, videos and documentaries have had global impact.”
