House Of Lords Session Interrupted By Mission Impossible Theme Ringtone

Proceedings in the House of Lords Monday were interrupted briefly Monday when the mobile phone of Labour peer Lord Tony Woodley rang out the Mission Impossible theme tune.

The session was undertaking the swearing in of Scottish landowner Lord Robbie Douglas-Miller as environment minister, when the incident occurred. Only the first few notes of the ringtone could be heard, but the iconic theme song was immediately recognisable as that from the action spy film series, featuring Tom Cruise.

Afterward, an embarrassed Lord Woodley addressed parliament: “Could I first of all apologise to the Speaker and particularly to our new lord Douglas Miller for my phone going off. I’ve never been so embarrassed in all my life. I’m sincerely sorry.”

Some online commentators, however, seeing the irony and timing as somewhat fitting, mused that Lord Douglas-Miller’s new post is a sort of mission impossible.

Fortunately, for Lord Woodley, the phone did not self-destruct.
