Prince Harry agreed a “substantial” financial settlement that will see an end to the four-year long phone hacking case with Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN).
Celebrity lawyer David Sherborne, representing the Duke of Sussex, disclosed to Mr Justice Fancourt at the High Court on Friday that MGN had consented to compensate Prince Harry with “a substantial additional sum by way of damages” as well as his costs.
The specifics of the settlement remain undisclosed, but the resolution prevents a second trial, which Prince Harry had last month indicated he was prepared to pursue. The 39-year-old Duke sued MGN over 148 articles he claimed had been obtained through illegal means.
A decisive ruling in December found the publisher engaged in “extensive” phone hacking activities from 2006 to 2011, involving 148 news articles. At the time the court awarded Harry £140,600 in damages for 15 out of 33 scrutinised articles.
