SNP Reports Rishi Sunak To Ethics Chief For ‘Shameful’ Rwanda Flights Bet With Piers Morgan

The Scottish National Party (SNP) reported Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Monday afternoon for a “clear breach of the ministerial code” after engaging in a £1,000 wager with TalkTV’s Piers Morgan over the Rwanda deportation scheme.

Sunak shook hands with Morgan during an interview that also aired Monday, who bet the prime minister that his plan to deport individuals to Rwanda before the next General Election would fail.

The incident ignited a storm of criticism online but the SNP decided to go one step further and report Sunak to ethics advisor Laurie Magnus and Simon Case, head of the civil service.

The SNP’s Cabinet Office spokesperson Kirsty Blackman called for an official investigation, condemning the bet as “shameful” and indicative that “near billionaire Sunak doesn’t have a clue what life is like for the rest of us in a cost of living crisis.”

First Minister Humza Yousaf said: “The PM is quite literally gambling on people’s lives. This Tory UK Government always finds a way of degrading itself even further. We should boot every Tory MP out of office. The SNP is second place in every Tory-held seat in Scotland. Vote SNP to ensure Scotland is Tory-free.”

Legislation written by Sunak’s government to brand Rwanda a safe country for deportations has already passed through the House of Commons and is now being hotly debated in the House of Lords. The policy is the linchpin in the government’s efforts to initiate the flights of migrants to the country and achieve another of its policy pledges.

It’s a policy that the government has struggled to push forward, having spent £240 million spent by the UK Government before any asylum seekers have yet been sent to Rwanda. The Rwanda bill’s passage through parliament has seen several senior Tory MPs resign in disapproval.
