Another False Controversy: Mika Brzezinski’s Prop 8 “Prancing” Comment
Mika Brzezinski on Morning Joe unleashed some criticism this morning when, speaking about the reaction in L.A. to the monumental court decision to overturn the referendum in California that prohibits same-sex marriage, she said, “People were prancing around in the streets.” Many were atwitter, saying that Brzezinski’s words are the kind of provincial thinking about gays and lesbians that led to the relegation of gay marriage to begin with. But they are wrong.
2009: A Year of Transparency
Many are extremely happy to see this year come to a close, but we shouldn’t confuse the roller coaster with what is actually a stunning conjunctural moment. 2009 was a year riddled with the collisions of many different trajectories — and they all collided with techology. More than anything, this was the Year of Transparency.
The Peggy Noonan Problem
What Makes Good Gay Journalism? And Why Is There So Little Of It?
On October 2nd, the New York Times published a piece called “The High Price of Being a Gay Couple,” (still #2 most e-mailed in the “Your Money” section). Unlike so many of the articles I read everyday about issues facing the gay community, this one established a way of looking at the topic that renders it serious, without having to explain, qualify, or prove it. Why aren’t there more pieces like this?
Did Advocate.com Kill an Article to Please Its Porn Industry Bigwigs?
Freelance writer Matt Siegel submitted an article entitled “Business Before Pleasure,” to Advocate.com, where it lived, happily published, as a “Health Exclusive” for all of 8 days before it was mysteriously pulled down without explanation. Could the website, owned by a parent company that also owns multiple gay porn magazines, have stepped in to protects its other interests when the controversial piece had too many people talking?
Reflections on Gays in the Media: What We Can Learn From Charles Perez
In a recent interview with Advocate.com, gay ex-TV anchor Charles Perez described his former boss Bill Pohovey (another openly gay man) thusly: “I think he’s a company man. I think if you had to label Bill a gay man or a company man, you would pick company man.” Without knowing anything about Charles Perez or [...]
Mediaite’s Own Health Care Town Hall Meeting
In honor light of all the coverage health care town hall meetings are getting, Mediaite decided to hold a town hall of its own. We wanted to know what New York had to say about the proposed health care bill. Alas, New York has not been one of the states blessed with an exciting Town Hall (and New Jersey doesn’t count). So, we did what we could.
Meme Watch: The Panels of Death and Health Care
Ever find that sometimes when you’re talking with friends or co-workers that a certain word keeps getting repeated over and over again? Maybe it’s a flashy one or just a really useful one, but it just keeps making the rounds in e-mails or chit-chat? Well, you’re not alone – the media also loves to reuse and recycle (not so much reduce). Welcome to Mediaite’s Meme Watch, a compilation of the media’s most talked-about words… literally. This edition? Death panels!
Mediaite Mash-up: Beck Asks The Questions You Haven’t Wondered About Health Care
Everyone on television is talking about health care right now, but in not quite the same way Glenn Beck was last night on his Fox News show. It was definitely not a show to miss and we’ve decided to take Beck’s advice about sharing it with others. Except we’ve packaged it with only the best parts, and put it to music, for your viewing pleasure.
Mediaite’s Very Special Guest Appearance on Anderson Cooper 360
Maybe it’s all that medium is the message stuff, but Mediaite has been popping up in the television world a lot lately. Prior to all that scruffy-faced interrupting, Mediaite made a cameo on Anderson Cooper 360‘s “The Shot.” Apparently Anderson Cooper is a bit of a moody muggle.
Weekly Newsy Awards – You Just Put Your Lips Together and Blow
Day jobs are annoying, if for no other reason than because they steal you away from the best moments on television. No, not the season finales of primetime shows or the elimination challenges on reality programs – weekday cable news! The stuff you miss whilst sitting behind a desk is both funnier and sadder than [...]

Gaybama Revisited – You Spoke, I Listened!
To all my dear and queer Chatty Cathy’s out there: Thank you! It’s been great to hear what everyone had to say about my article posted to Mediaite a few days ago: “Obama’s Fiercest Critics: The Gay Online Media.” Now, allow me to clarify where I was coming from.
Obama’s Fiercest Critics: The Online Gay Media
Maybe because he threw a big, gay White House party recently, or maybe because Joe Jackson’s Ranch Records plug was more important to the American public, Obama has been let off the hook recently about his commitment (or lack thereof) to changing the nation’s policies that make gay Americans second-class citizens. There is, however, a strong online gay tidal wave brewing – one dedicated solely to shining a light on every gay thing Obama does.
