A Year Of Obama: Top Ten Highs And Lows Of The Last Twelve Months

The Inauguration

Despite the struggling economy the nation was still mostly operating under a happy election euphoria come Inauguration Day. It’s true! D.C. was packed with festive Inauguration goers from across the country. Schools stopped classes to allow students to watch the address (there were stories that when the power went out at one Brooklyn school student were farmed out to local living rooms). Here is Obama’s speech, which I remember as being really good, though honestly at this point the President has given so many speeches I would probably have trouble discerning it from a number of other really good speeches I’ve heard in the interim in a blind hearing test.

We need a change to the Constitution that allows for a referendom on the quality of an administration after the first year.
It would allow a choice. Pick one in each section.

9 Months… and what has been accomplished. A dead fly, beer, and a failed attack on FNC. A few good speeches, an (admittedly) undeserved award, and some legislation that probably won’t make it to law.

    Woo-hoo????

what had Bush accomplished by this time in his rookie year.

Well… Bush didn’t have the same kind of situation when he took office, now did he? No wars, no recession, etc. Additionally, by this time, 9-11 had already happened, and we were in Afghanistan… Bush’s approval numbers were way high.

But more importantly… does it matter? I thought Obama was elected to be BETTER than Bush… not to be equal to? Why would you want to compare them, to show how parallel they are? What does that prove?

Enraged, Maddow Explains ‘Racist History’ Tea Party Is Embracing

    video

Wow. Rachel Maddow will not be giving the Tea Partiers any sort of free pass and once you watch this you may understand why. Specifically, Maddow is criticizing (actually, she's eviscerating...no joke) what she calls the Tea Partiers "embrace of racist history" -- in this case, a call for the return of segregation-era literacy tests.

Stephen Colbert: ‘Sarah Palin is a F***king Retard’

The usually reliable Keith Olbermann's inability to nail Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin on Limbaugh's use of the term "retard" has been pretty frustrating. Sure, he has posited Palin as a hypocrite, but several times he has repeated Rush's and Palin's dueling assertions that he was "quoting" Rahm Emanuel, or that he was being "satirical," without really challenging it. Luckily, Stephen Colbert actually knows what the word "satire" means, and deployed a pile of it on Palin and Rush last night.
