CNN Poll: GOP Voters Find Perry “Most Electable”

Rick Perry continues to poll well, and a CNN/ORC International Poll released ahead of tonight’s debate shows the Texas statesmen leading in both theoretical votes and general electability, earning the all important “nice guy” vote.
The reports find that Perry easily earns his party’s nomination, holding 30 percent of Republicans’ and Independents’ theoretical votes, while Mitt Romney earns only 18 percent. It also finds that, more drastically, 42 percent of those polled saying he has the best chance of beating Obama next year while only 26 percent say Romney has the best chance of defeating the president. ”Perry doesn’t simply have the most support in a hypothetical ballot,” explains CNN polling director Keating Holland, “He also tops the list of GOP candidates on every personal quality tested.”
That Tim Pawlenty and Mike Huckabee gave their endorsements to Romney today might indicate that certain party members’ confidence lies elsewhere than their voters. This is something Salon‘s Alex Pareene suggests they consider. “Republican voters have convinced themselves that Perry can win, because they like him the most,” he says:
A party is probably better off going with someone who excites people — like Barack Obama! — than someone who won the nomination because everyone convinced themselves that he was the most “electable” according to certain totally unscientific parameters — like John Kerry! — and the GOP always does well for itself by reaching just a bit further rightward than is currently politically acceptable. … Perry’s only slightly higher risk, with potentially much greater reward.
