Court Stenographer Repeatedly Types ‘I Hate My Job’; Endangers Some Convictions
A New York City court stenographer went Full-Shining recently, authorities discovered after multiple court transcripts were revealed to have been “gibberish.” Per the New York Post, the now-fired Daniel Kochanski corrupted at least thirty court transcripts, in many of them typing “I hate my job” over and over again.
One source told the Post that the ruined transcripts may imperil convictions, as defendants can now claim crucial evidence was missing.
Kochanski was fired in March of 2012, and court authorities tried to get him to make sense of the transcripts, to no real avail. Judges have since been holding “reconstruction hearings,” in which trial participants attempt to restore the transcripts, which sounds as though it’s going about as well as you’d think.
Kochanski denied the charges, claiming his dismissal was due to substance abuse, not any sort of sabotage of transcripts.
