David Letterman Extortionist Joe Halderman Hired As Producer For ID’s ‘On The Case’
TV Newser’s Alex Weprin reported on Thursday morning that Emmy-winning producer Joe Halderman, the man who attempted to blackmail David Letterman in 2009, has been hired as a producer for Discovery ID’s On The Case With Paula Zahn. Scott Weinberger, Executive Producer of On the Case, confirmed the hire in a statement:
“On behalf of On The Case’s production team, we have been impressed with Joe Halderman’s professional accomplishments as an Emmy award-winning producer for 48 Hours and CBS News,” Weinberger wrote. ”With the network’s prior approval, the team has brought Halderman on as a producer for On The Case. We are confident that Halderman will make significant contributions to the success of our award-winning investigative newsmagazine.”

Halderman pleaded guilty to the extortion charges last year — he was asking Letterman for $2 million in exchange for not writing books or screenplays on affairs Letterman had with staffers — and was sentenced to six months in prison (he served four after being let out for good behavior). But, before the extortion attempt, he was a highly-regarded producer who won his Emmy for working on 48 Hours Mystery.
Weprin says that Halderman is not expected to work in the field, and adds that this is not he first job he has been offered since his release from prison.
