Elena Kagan and Ann Coulter Attacked For Physical Appearance

Here’s a neat juxtaposition. Media Matters details a laundry list of conservative figures who are making sport of Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan. For purposes of this demonstration, I’ll single out Human Events Editor-in-Chief Jason Mattera, who tweeted “Why do Janet Napolitano, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan all look like linebackers for the New York JETS?”

And in this corner, we have Countdown host Keith Olbermann, who finishes off an Ann Coulter “Worst Persons” award with an observation about Coulter’s left eye. Do you think Mattera and Olbermann ever thought they would share common ground?

Actually, this is nothing new for either of them. Olbermann has taken shots at Coulter’s looks before, and most of Mattera’s act consists of trading in gender-based insults. I just thought the synchronicity here was worth noting.

Some might argue a difference in the degree of provocation here, with Kagan at zero and Coulter at 11, but that’s not the point. In fact, Mattera obviously cares very little how anyone outside his narrow world feels about him. Olbermann is supposed to want to be better than this.

Olbermann wants to be above name calling and petty insults? When did that happen?

“Olbermann is supposed to want to be better than this. ”

    You’re kidding, right?…

  • TylerDurden

Why do they look like linebackers?

    Because they are.

Keith Olbermann is a slime ball.
He brought up Laura Bush and the tragic accident she was involved in when she was a teenager, for Chrissake.
    He is a POS.
    Stop kissing his ass.
    You look like a fool.
Everybody hates him. Everybody with sense, that is.

BTW, KO, FDR’s favorite, Alger Hiss, was a Commie!

Before this article, I’ve never heard of Jason Mattera, talk about different levels. I am sure I can also find a no-name progressive blogger making fun of Kagan as well.

  • badr

Jason’s got a good point. I wish I could look like a linebacker.

If Olbermann wanted to be mean, he could have mentioned Ann “thrax” Coulter’s huge Adam’s apple. She looks like an ostrich swallowed a coconut.

  • shootfromthehip

I think Ann is kind of hot, actually.

It’s her ideas that can be ugly sometimes.

    Keith, you can do better.

Ummm…what IS it with her eye?

I think I get the analogy: Beauty and the Beast. Right?

  • http://none pyrope

The above said, it STILL doesn’t matter to me what a person looks like so much as what their qualifications are. I would advocate hiring (in this case “confirming”) Godzilla if he (it) could do the job I wanted done.

  • errxn

Complain about Hannity, O’Reilly, and Beck all you want, but really, when’s the last time any of them stooped to openly mocking. someone’s appearance like that? Olbermann is a unique talent in the realm of douchebaggery

Olbermann can be a horrible sexist, but he at least is educable (by which I mean: willing and able to learn). This is not, however, one of the better examples of him being sexist. In fact, in my strongly feminist opinion, it’s not sexist at all. The comment (about Coulter’s eye) was about a temporary cosmetic matter (or cosmetic malfunction, if you prefer). Apparently, her false eyelashes on that one eye have come loose. While men would not likely suffer that exact problem, they can just as easily have make-up problems now and then and in this media-savvy age, I don’t think it’s abnormal or discriminatory to comment on them. Or, let me put it this way. I despise Ann Coulter (along with numerous other rightwing idiot women),. but I have and will continue to defend her and others against sexist remarks from my brothers on the left. PLENTY of reason to criticize them, but gender-specific critiques are totally out of bounds. This isn’t a case where I feel she-as-a-woman needs my defense at all.

I seriously doubt Keith wants to be better than that. He’s a pseudo-intellectual. As much as I disagree with Maddow, I begrudgingly respect her. Obly? Not a chance in hell.
