Incoming Tea Party Republican: ‘We Should Censor American News Agencies Which Enabled’ WikiLeaks

audio

Just-elected Florida Republican Allen West will be headed to Congress in the New Year, but he’s putting the lamestream media on notice: if you’re on Julian Assange‘s team, West wants to shut you down with some serious censorship.

The Tea Party-backed West made the comments on an internet radio station, saying the government “should be censoring the American news agencies which enabled (Assange).”

West compared the publication of WikiLeaks’ classified documents by newspapers to “aiding and abetting of a serious crime:”

There are different means by which you can be attacked. I mean it doesnt have to be a bomb or an airplane flying into a building. It doesn’t have to be a shooting. It can be through cyber attacks, it could be through leaking of very sensitive classified information. Regardless of whether you think it causes any harm, the fact that here is an individual that is not an American citizen first and foremost, for whatever reason gotten his hands on classified American material and put it out there in the public domain. And I think that we also should be censoring the American news agencies which enabled him to do this and also supported him and applauding him for the efforts. So that’s kind of aiding and abetting of a serious crime.

Listen to West’s comments here:

So, I take it you mix a bit of libertarianism with your conservatism as I do with my liberalism. A small piece of common ground.

Wow. A combat vet thinks people who publish classified national security material should be dealt with harshly? Whoda thunk?

I believe that most of the sides, Liberal, Conservatism, Independent, etc. can pretty much all agree…No censorship. Is this the same guy who got the woman who said if the ballots don’t work, bullets will, or something along those lines to be the head of his office in Congress?

Tea partier, Democrat, Republican or Independent, it makes no difference….. that’s the most idiotic Statement I’ve ever heard. The fact that it comes from someone headed to washington is utterly astonishing!!!! If an american news agency puts out american deemed illegal information then you shut them down and charge them with treason. YOU DO NOT CENSOR THEM BEFORE THE FACT!!!!! Read the constitution you dumbass!

This is the gut that Michelle – in – Utah wants for VP. She shared that on the article the other day. I would say she doesn’t have very good taste in men.

Yes, this is the same man who wanted the woman with the gun solution as his chief of staff. Fortunately, she decline the job after it all hit the media,

Annnnnnnnnnnd the Tea Party kicks off their push for less government intrusion with…
…calls for heightened government intrusion, specifically regarding the 1st Amendment.

This *is* the same group that espouses “Constitutional Purity”, right?

there you go… here is a disgrace to the tea party and our country. We are so used to politicians breaking their promises after they are elected, but here you have someone, whose future you know already.

  • felixw

If you want to know the REAL reason for the tea parties, look at the last gasp Democrat spending bill that they are trying to force through at the last minute. This is another trillion dollar bill — 2,000 pages long, with $500 million in new spending on EACH PAGE. And the Democrats want to vote on it tomorrow, before anyone has a chance to figure out what is in it.

At some point, Mediaite (and the rest of the media) should cover these REAL issues driving the tea party, instead of searching for outrageous, unrepresentative comments by obscure people. Or is honest reporting not allowed?

I can see your point. Mediaite covers the media, so you can say that Mediaite is merely reflecting the media’s preferred slant on stories. But Mediaite should also aspire to being a watchdog on the media, and point out inconsistencies and hypocrisies. And no news story has been more misrepresented than the tea parties. The mainstream media refuses to mention the issues of fiscal responsibility and government accountability that have driven the tea parties, while building their story on some unrepresentative sign or unhinged comment. Mediaite would have more credibility if it occasionally pointed out this obvious bias.

You guys can say all you want about Assange but what happens when a Democrat says this about Fox News? Oh wait they already did and everyone flips out.

Why don’t both sides agree that censorship isn’t right?

And we can’t go and kill people that happen upon American intelligence, Assange didn’t steal it or pay for it, it was handed to him and as a journalist he published it.

    End of story.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jon-Martin/43100610 Jon Martin

I thought the tea party movement was against big government… Now they want the government censoring all news? Downvote me or whatever but it seems to me like this guy wants to give the government more control. Even if it temporarily hurts the democrats, do you really want that? There must be some reasonable republicans besides Ron Paul, that don’t think the government controlling the news is a good idea. That would mean that whenever an administration came into power, they could effectively control public perception of events and twist them to appear good for the administration. Either side could do this…

Do you REALLY think that’s a good idea?

I am heard on the African-American Conservative Radio Show saying the media should be censured- meaning “harshly criticized.” In no way would I ever ask to “censor” anyone or any organization. Of course, very few news organizations are even printing this reply so here it is for you so you understand my intention and my vision as a leader:

“It has never been my intent to quiet or censor the press or anyone for that matter utilizing their right of freedom of speech granted to them under this country’s great American Constitution. The confusion comes with the word censor…when I meant censure- in context that the media should be harshly criticized for printing the damaging documents Assange has released which so clearly puts our soldiers and country at risk.”

He wants to keep classified information classified. That’s stuff the government is supposed to be in control of. I’m not in agreement with his target, but I certainly appreciate the sentiment. And I can understand how, as a Batallion Commander in Iraq, he’s probably written an awful lot of classified communiques which it would really, really, really piss him off to have them fall into the wrong hands because some angry child decided to get his emo ya-ya’s out and strike a blow against mean old America. Because that could, you know, get his people killed.

Sometimes it helps to take a minute and see if you can figure out where somebody might be coming from. And it’s also helpful if you don’t make stuff up in your head and attribute it to another person like “Now they want the government censoring all news.”

Yeah, censure makes more sense. How do you censor a news agency for doing stuff that isn’t reporting? Censure is no big deal. Ask Charlie Rangel.

Abuse of a practice doesn’t mean that the practice isn’t necessary, or that we should just stop worrying about keeping certain things under our hat. It sounds like “censor” to me, but “censure” makes more sense in the context, and West seems to concede that he misspoke. I can’t believe that he had a pro-censorship position that he wanted to publicly advance, declared it intentionally, and then completely reversed himself almost immediately because the blogs started squawking (and lying) about it. You can’t reasonably not give him the benefit of the doubt. This article deserves an update.

What I’ve said has failed? We don’t have classified information anymore, and we’re all transparent? When did that happen?

Yes, I think confidential secrets are free game when they are leaked by accident. Your thinking is flawed.

That’s weird, because I am in lockstep with everything the Obama Administration has said about this topic. If my thinking is flawed, so is the thinking of Eric Holder, Hillary Clinton, Robert Gates, Robert Gibbs, James Jones and every other White House or Cabinet member that has spoken about it. If I’m wrong, then they’re wrong too. And you know who else is wrong? Barack Obama

Nevertheless, these cables could compromise private discussions with foreign governments and opposition leaders, and when the substance of private conversations is printed on the front pages of newspapers across the world, it can deeply impact not only US foreign policy interests, but those of our allies and friends around the world. To be clear — such disclosures put at risk our diplomats, intelligence professionals, and people around the world who come to the United States for assistance in promoting democracy and open government. These documents also may include named individuals who in many cases live and work under oppressive regimes and who are trying to create more open and free societies. President Obama supports responsible, accountable, and open government at home and around the world, but this reckless and dangerous action runs counter to that goal. By releasing stolen and classified documents, Wikileaks has put at risk not only the cause of human rights but also the lives and work of these individuals. We condemn in the strongest terms the unauthorized disclosure of classified documents and sensitive national security information.

If you’re disagreeing with the President during a time of war about the security of military and diplomatic classified material, you, according to what passes for logic in that dump you just took on the other thread are a TRAITOR. Also, you want your friends in the military to die while President Obama is trying to keep them safe. Now close your browser and go clean your room.

Yeah, “Censoring” doesn’t make sense in the context of the sentence and while it does sound like he may be saying it, the words are too close and you do have to allow for the Florida via Georgia accent.

I say non-story, drummed-up by anti-Tea Partiests looking for dirt.

BTW – For the record: Neither of my comments on this matter should be seen as an endorsement of censuring. While I have a problem with cults of personalities in general, I support the Wikileaks’ mission and freedom of the press.

I think the jury is still out on this guy and I’m sure there will be more to come. West does seem to know how to play the game with his quick response and cutting loose that radical nutjob from his office.

The word “all” in the reference of racists, should be changed to “most,” since this is one black person out of thousands of hate filled uninformed teas!

I believe it has consistently been the liberals who said ALL Tea Partiers were racists.

    Again most, not all!

Tim, We shall, on occasion, disagree but respectfully so. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

In reviewing your comments, you are correct “most” liberals claim Tea Party people are racists, which, as it seems you know, is INcorrect.

Re: “notice: if you’re on Julian Assange’s team, West wants to shut you down with some serious censorship.”

shut down nytimes/ bob woodward [all the president's men] /put in prison Ellsberg [pentagon papers]/ crooks of wall street/ presidents who escalate unjust wars/ presidents who start unjust wars/ fed who won’t “open their books”/bankers who rip-off their customers/ stop the fraud in medicare, medicaid/ put in jail those who vote more than once & are not citizens – AZ they don’t even have to prove citizenship to vote …… the list is endless…. but NO you want to censor journalism instead and kill the journalist who GETS OUT OF CONTROL.

and therefore you approve of lieberman huckabee palin and others who call for the “illegal murder” of Assange.
is that what america is about – censoring all that is not approved by USG [U.S. Government]?
most americans get their news from TV — they don’t read books – then they turn on idiot box, and text a thousand messages and eat-to-get-fat-w/diabetes-and-no-exercise no more nightly family dinners.
kids today have TVs & PCs cell-phones in their rooms……… both parents must work. crimes/drugs rampant in schools. jails so full the courts have to let-em-out just for space for new prisoners.

?censor journalism? I voted for you once – I will not vote for you twice.
and neither will i vote for sarah palin – who advocates the murder of Julian Assange.
that’s “incitement to commit murder” a/k/a FELONY.
obviously A West knows nothing about Assange either – you people should do your RESEARCH before you blindly accept the propaganda of USG & TV Media………. shame on you all.
how much more of TV Media should be censored?

So you think freedom of speech/press/journalism should be ended.
