‘Iowa Nice’: Filmmaker Busts Stereotypes Of Hawkeye State

As the world turns its attention today to a tiny, rural midwestern state that could determine the next leader of the free world, a native Iowan profanely busts stereotypes people frequently make about the Hawkeye State. “So I hear you think you know something about Iowa. F*ck You!” exclaims filmmaker Scott Siepker.

Matt Woolbright from the Des Moines Register has more on Siepker:

Native Iowan and the host of Iowa Outdoors on Iowa Public Television, Scott Siepker, teamed up with his friend Paul Benedict to make a popular YouTube video dispelling some of the common stereotypes about Iowa.

“The main objective was just to make people laugh,” Siepker, 29, said.
The video, titled “Iowa Nice,” does have more serious purposes as well. Because there is no Democratic challenger for President Barack Obama, a one-sided perspective of Iowans is being highlighted with the national media in town for the first-in-the-nation caucuses, Siepker said.

“The ideal outcome is to get people to know Iowa as it is, and not what you think it is,” said Siepker, whose favorite stereotypes are that Iowans are all just a bunch of hillbillies and that Iowa is where all the potatoes come from.

But Iowa DOES suck.  Trust me, I lived there for a brief period of time.  There’s absolutely nothing to do there.  Unless you really, really, love going to Walmart.

Shouldn’t that be, “F*ck you with a corncob.”

Hah. Reminds me of Augusta, Georgia where I was born. Nice enough city, I suppose. We’ve got golf. But growing up there is torture.

Unless you really, really, love going to Walmart.

All this does is reinforce the opinion that Iowa is bush-league, devoid of culture, full of people who couldn’t make it elsewhere …

    Dear Iowa,
Sorry that I drive through you so very fast.  I pay little attention as consequence of either excitement while heading westward or exhaustion as I travel eastward.  Sadly, all I can imagine of you as I write is the bandana rack at the I-80 truckstop and the view of Omaha from across the Missouri River.  I am sure you are a wonderful state.  I will try to pay more attention as I pass through you again.
