Joe Biden’s Visit To Leno’s Couch Stops Traffic At LAX

Vice President Joe Biden, a favorite of the media for (among other things) his reliable ability to produce a headline-friendly gaffe, was less popular with a planeloads of passengers stranded at LAX on Friday including the Wrap’s Sharon Waxman who penned a fuming piece on the incident.

The VP was in town to do the Leno show and apparently the flight restrictions incurred by his visit screwed up traffic at LAX.

A spokesman for the vice president said he was unaware of the FAA temporary flight restriction that stopped flights coming in, and delayed those going out.

“I know we didn’t ask for anything,” Biden’s spokesman James Carney told TheWrap. “There was no sign of any stoppage. And there shouldn’t have been one.”

Oh, but there was. Passengers were stuck for anywhere from 45 minutes to four hours as a result (including this writer), leaving many of them fuming.

“I sincerely hope that the vice president was oblivious to the number of lives he inconvenienced by deciding to land at LAX and his attempted humor on the Tonight Show,” said Will Roos, the owner of an environmental company GreenUp who was on his way back from a business trip in Sun Valley.

The Biden people seemed puzzled by all the fuss:

”We regularly fly into large commercial airports. We work with the FAA and everyone involved to minimize the impact we have,” said spokesman Edwin Donovan. “Restrictions get put in place when the vice president flys into an airport. There’s going to be some impact on flights. But we have no information to show any great delay or any impact at LAX.”

All in all, sounds like a regular day at LaGuardia, Vice President or not.

I read both this piece and Waxman’s ‘fuming piece.’ Certainly seems LAX is the culprit and not Biden’s flight.

“Certainly?!” Why is that? LAX is following RESTRICTIONS placed upon it by regulating authoritiies.

The hubris of the jerks in power is unending. Look at the incongruity between the statements from Biden’s people above. One the one hand, they say they “didn’t ask for anything”, as if they have to. When Air Force Two shows up, the controllers have rules in place that force them to change the rules.

Then he says there were “no signs of any stoppage.” Huh? What would those look like to the people who were greenlighted in and out while other planes waited where they sat, or were diverted toward longer approaches? How would Biden’s people know about ANY of that unless people showed up and complained after the fact, which they DID?

“No signs of stoppage. And there shouldn’t have been one.” What? Playing dumb? These people know full well there are rules that restrict airspace especially for them. They even say so later on, when they say “We work with the FAA and everyone involved to minimize the impact we have” and “Restrictions get put in place when the vice president flys into an airport. There’s going to be some impact on flights.” So YES, they DO know. They ARE aware that they have an impact.

And now, the cherry on top. “But we have no information to show any great delay or any impact at LAX.” Cut the crap. YOU DO SO. The very fact that you are responding to complaints about the great delays at LAX that day shows that you DO have information that people were overly inconvenienced.

Lying jerks play dumb, pretend they don’t hear the complaints, and then say “what complaints?”

SO, tell me again how this could POSSIBLY be LAX’s failing, when they simply employ controllers who are given two sets of rules. Those with Air Force 1 and 2 are not around, and those more restrictive rules when they suddenly barge into the schedule of flights coming in. Which they probably do at the last minute, for security purposes.

That leaves us with the question of what security measures are needed. Are these too much inconvenience? Not enough? That can be debated. But assuming the security measures are PERFECTLY balanced for risk and inconvenience to the public. We are then left with the question of WHY the VP needs to travel. If it is for something important, the importance may dictate that we bear the cost and inconvenience needed for security. But if the pupose is to go on Leno it is a frivolous waste. Suppose we wanted a nuclear warhead to go on Leno? You’d need all the security and inconvenience yes, to make sure nobody stole it. But the question remains, did it NEED to be there in the first place? What was the point?

And THAT, is the problem with Biden being on as well.

“There was no sign of any stoppage. And there shouldn’t have been one.”

BS… In 1993 two of Los Angeles International Airport’s four runways were shut down for nearly an hour so that President Clinton’s Beverly Hills hairstylist, Chistophe, could come aboard and give Mr. Clinton a high-price trim.

When a President goes to campaign for a Senator in front of a friendly audience, he does more harm than good by tying up traffic and pissing off most of the real voters.

Oh, the faux outrage. Even though Biden didn’t really need to do the Tonight Show, why all the fuss? The Vice President flies places, there are going to be disruptions where he goes, inconveniencing passengers.

As long as there have been Vice Presidents flying places, there have been inconvenienced people, not only at the airport, but on the road ways to accomodate his motorcade. I dont’ see how this story is significant enough to be featured on Mediaite. Then again, every time Keith Olbermann opens his mouth or Glenn Beck says something, by God as my witness, Mediaite has a story on it.

Isn’t it just amazing how incensed people get when something affects them negatively?

Yet, these same folks couldn’t care less otherwise!

Sadly, we truly ARE the most egocentric society on the planet.

Eh, it happens. As Moderate noted…

I remember that reading about that farce.

We had President Bush in 2004 at the Daytona Beach Speedway and it was even worse of a mess than normal. I understand the security reasons why the Secret Service won’t pre-announce a governmental flight plan. Obviously, it does inconvenience people (especially locals…I live approx. 3 miles from the Speedway) but you adapt.

Plus, think about how much security co-ordination is necessary to transport the official. As I recall with Bush, I think he flew into Jacksonville and choppered in to the Speedway itself.. All airspace was shut down and traffic was even worse than normal…I personally just walked to the race, met my friends and caught a ride back home.

    It happens.

Not counting the “I-accidentally-shot-my-friend-in-the-face” trip, I believe VP Cheney holed up in a White House covert tunnel for eight years and that’s why people resent the fact that Biden is out and about. Yes, we all have to put up with the security restrictions imposed by VIP travel, and I’m old enough to remember when Ronald Reagan plugged our airport and major freeways on his travel through the city, but it’s just something we have to endure.

Sorry you’re fuming, Sharon Waxman, and I don’t blame you, but heads are not going to roll over this, no matter how long you were inconvenienced. Stuff happens.

“A spokesman for the vice president said he was unaware”

So why did not the spokesman just say we are aware it causes a mess but it is one of the perks of being VP.

  • Moderate

Biden the idiot said the hide-e-hole was in the back yard behind the VP home. Another one of his many gaffes.

Because a spokesman speaks for someone else. Normally cryptically so no blame can be assigned.

It’s a Presidential perk…Sharon Waxman never commented on the Spirit Airlines strike that almost shut down Orlando’s airport a couple of weeks ago. That inconvenienced me for my business travel plus my cousin for her international travel.

If you don’t deal with it…you don’t know about it…travel, for most of us,can be tiresome and annoying.

Smart–and considerate–move would have been to land at a military base where there is ample security and then motorcade to the Leno show…but bidenpants has never been known for being smart or considerate.
