Kanye West Calls Remark About Jews an ‘Ignorant Compliment,’ Compares to Penis Size Stereotype
During a radio interview in November, rap superstar Kanye West drew fire for remarking that “Black people don’t have the same level of connections as Jewish people. Black people don’t have the same connection as oil people.”
This week, West addressed those comments in another radio interview, calling his remark about Jews an “ignorant compliment,” akin to the stereotype that “All black guys have big penises.”
In an interview with B96 Chicago’s Stylz and Roman on Wednesday, West revisited his remarks, to hearty laughter from his hosts. “I thought that I was giving a compliment, but it came off more ignorant,” West said, “when I said this comment about Jews having money, and blacks not having money. I think it was, like, a ‘ignorant compliment.”
“I don’t know how being told that you have money is, like, an insult,” he continued, to ever-louder laughs. “That would be like, if somebody complimented, like, black guys and said ‘All black guys got big penises,’ and then you don’t want to be the black guy that raise your hand, like ‘No! That’s not true! I’ve got proof!”
After several seconds to allow the laughter to trail off, West added “I thought by saying that everyone had money, it was a compliment, it was like an ignorant compliment.”
Here’s audio of West’s remarks, with a little bit of context at the top, from B96:
