Sad news: MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann‘s father, Theodore Olbermann, passed away earlier this afternoon at age 81. Olbermann Senior had been battling after complications from colon surgery last year. Olbermann had taken a leave of absence from Countdown for the past week to tend to his ailing father. He also used his program to discuss the personal matter of his father’s sickness and the role health care played in his treatment.

From March 11th, Olbermann explains the importance of having a living will:

Olbermann wrote a tribute to his father on his personal blog at 5:30 this evening, saying “He was my inspiration, and will always remain so. His bravery these last six months cannot be measured. He is as much my hero now, as he was when I was five years old.”

It’s always sad when someone’s loved one passes

…but why is this a national story?

God bless… I know how hard it was to was for my father to go through the death of his mother. Its never easy—hope he takes some time off and able to spend some valuable time with his family.

@barney: Most likely b/c Olbermann brought his father into the national debate regarding end of life care.

So Barney just because the story appears here that makes it a national story?? I know most people are here are KO haters but the first two posters had the decency to be kind. He lost both parents in less than a year and is a TV personality what more do you want????

  • The Real Royal King

My deepest sympathies and my sincerest prayers for Keith a nd for his father as his father comes into our Lord’s Nearer Presence.

    Tacky, Barney, very tacky.

My condolences to the Olbermann family.

Not a fan of KO, but let’s have some respect to a fellow human being, at this sad time in his life.

Patsy uses the death of Mr. Olbermann to drum up interest in some blog!

    You’re all heart, Patsy!…

My condolences go out to Keith. I’m a big fan. And since I lost my dad in 1994 and my mom in 2003, I have no quams about saying what I’m about to say. I find the comments of some on this site to be tasteless. To that end, I’m saying an impecatory prayer for you and your family. Look it up!

Politics aside for this one. Losing a parent is tough.

My condolences. He’s at peace now. I recently lost my grandmother at the age of 91, and while it’s such a tough thing to lose a great matriarch or patriarch in your family, there is a measure of comfort in knowing the person is no longer suffering. All my best.

(Barney, it’s not really a national story–it’s covered here because this is a media site and the younger Mr. Olbermann is a major player in the media who gets lots of coverage here. It’s a niche story.)

    My condolences to the family.

Olby, Sorry to hear it bro. But at least the hurting stopped.

And anyone who is saying stuff here, look we have our differences with the man and I’m one for sure. But give the man some space. Now ain’t the time.

I am so sorry for your loss. I took care of my father when he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer; hardest thing I have ever done. You have my deepest sympathy.
