LAPD: Sorry, Durst Arrest Not Linked to HBO’s The Jinx
Real estate scion Robert Durst was arrested in New Orleans Sunday in connection with a LAPD homicide investigation, on the same day that a six-part HBO documentary series about him concluded with his apparent confession to the murders. That’s a hell of coinkidink, but both the documentary producers and the LAPD swear there was no collusion.
In fact the LAPD said Monday the arrest of Durst was not connected to the documentary, which purported to uncover new evidence against Durst, including the confession.
“We based our actions based on the investigation and the evidence,” said LAPD Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese, per the Los Angeles Times. “We didn’t base anything we did on the HBO series. The arrest was made as a result of the investigative efforts and at a time that we believe it was needed.”
“We’re constantly looking at cold cases,” Albanese said, “this being one of them.”
On Good Morning America this morning, director Andrew Jarecki said he had been in contact with law enforcement over the case, including sharing evidence, but denied having any ability to influence the timing of the arrest.
Last night Durst’s attorney aired suspicions about the timing, which is admittedly uncanny.
