Rachel Maddow And Fox News: It’s Complicated

“Let the record show that I also had a really pleasant conversation with Roger Ailes at a Christmas party once, that I shook Bill O’Reilly’s hand at Terry McAuliffe’s book party, and that I’m 99 percent sure Glenn Beck passed me in a green Bentley once on the Merritt Parkway.”

Rachel Maddow discusses her ‘relationship’ with FOX News with Politico.

See if you can keep up. This morning Howie Kurtz published an interview with Rachel Maddow in which she criticized Fox News saying: “For me it’s a question of whether you’re doing advocacy journalism or not. It’s not activism — you see a lot of that at Fox, using news coverage to inspire political participation.”

To which Fox responded: “These feelings that she experienced about Fox News didn’t stop her from applying for a job here.”

To which Maddow responded (to Politico): “I never personally applied for a job at Fox…I have an agent who I assume talks to everyone on my behalf, so I have no reason to believe that Fox’s claim that they were approached on my behalf is false, even if I never knew anything about it at the time.” Followed by the quote above (next time let’s hope one of them snaps a picture).

To which an FNC spokesperson tells Mediaite: “We find it entertaining that Rachel would implicate herself further on this matter and validate our original comment to Howie Kurtz.”

To which I (non-sequiturally) say: Someone should really give Maddow the anchor spot at Meet the Press.

Maddow gets beaten by Larry King, why would Fox want to hire her?

  • Azarkhan

“Someone should really give Maddow the anchor spot at Meet the Press.”

They would, Ms. MacNicol, except NBC wants to save the show, not destroy it.

  • Jim R

Go Rachel! Logic, intelligence, and independence drive Rupert and Roger wild!

Hey, David Gregory, why is Rachel doing your job? When pols and partisans peddle that easily dis-proven tripe you’re supposed to at least press them once before moving on or “leaving it there”.

Thanks for jumping in to interrupt Rachel, though, can’t have anyone offended by getting called on their BS.

  • TfT

So, you are saying the Rachel is mad because she didn’t get a job at FNC. She doesn’t do “advocacy” journalism? Too funny.

As we know FOX News thinks truth is just a pose. After all Maddow’s take on the news just screams FOX. Unfortunately FOX can’t handle or comprehend the truth on air or off. What the hell would FOX do with a host who has a functioning brain and is actually Fair and Balanced?

  • TfT

Fox: The MOST trusted name in news.

Have top rated programs? Kinda like they do now? Kinda the reason why they didn’t hire Maddow… who is neither fair nor balanced. That’s what you were getting at, right?

  • shootfromthehip

I find it hysterical that I’mnotblue defends Fox as “fair & balanced.”

Where is the show hosted by a Democrat on Fox news? That’s right, there is none.

MSNBC gives its entire AM lineup to Joe Scarborough, a former GOP Congressman.

Hahahahahahahahahaha!!1 I LOVE LOVE LOVE it when FOX NEWS The Most Powerful Name in News issues one of their HILARIOUS press releases where they hurl a ZINGER at MS-PEE-ON-ME or the Commie News Network!!1 It’s like when the bully at school beats you up, steals your lunch money, and then has an AWESOME ONE-LINER afterwards like, “now THAT’S change I can believe in!!!1″ What makes it all the sweeter is that it was directed at RACH-FAIL MADCOW, who the BIASED LIBS here at Mediaite have apparently ORDAINED as the best thing since CHAIRMAN MAO!!1

Glenn Beck isn’t a republican. He’s a libertarian. John Stewart was a guest on O’Reilly. Bob Beckel is a semi-regular on Hannity. Dick Morris worked for Bill Clinton. Do you ever watch Fox? You don’t seem to know a lot about it.

Toss Geraldo in the mix, and the Clinton-backer Greta as well.

“Maddow gets beaten by Larry King, why would Fox want to hire her?”

No actually Maddow’s show beats Larry King on most nights.

  • Fidoohki

Honestly? If Maddow could show that she could be bipartision in her criticism, she’d be an excellant moderator for MtP. Problem is she isn’t bipartision in any way, shape, or form so unless you want Meet the Press to tank
don’t make her moderator of it.

  • TfT

No actually Maddow does NOT beat LKL regularly; rarely she wins the hour, but it’s rare. Recently she can’t even get an audience of 1M viewers.

  • stoogedude

So? What does her ratings have to do with her broadcast? Does lower ratings equal “un-truthiness”? Because Fox News gets higher ratings means it’s always accurate?

  • http://www.nukethefridge.com MartiniShark

Just last week she misrepresented Glen Beck in her diatribe against his Global Warming stance. She condemned his making climate proclamations based on one snow storm, clearly omitting his own comment that basing something on one storm is not accurate. But it did allow her to be condescending towards him, so it was acceptable journalism.

Last time morons. There is One Rightwing show on at 9:00pm that would be Hannity the Mannity. Now there are 3, count them 3 liberal shows on at 9:00pm. Rachel, Joy and Larry. So you split the liberals between 3 shows and all the right wingers watch one show, and there you have it. If all of the right wingers watch Mannity, and all the normal people watch Larry, Rachel or Joy, then Mannity has more viewers. If you combine all the Normal people then Mannity loses horribly.

  • writer

Air America going into the toilet was an anomaly.

  • stoogedude

Well cmdrgmh, I don’t really see how Larry King is a liberal, nor do I see how Joy Behar is legit news. But the way I see it, conservatives believe that the mainstream media news circuit has a liberal bias, so they run over to Fox to get news slanted toward their worldview. MSNBC has few viewers because, frankly, liberals don’t need their news from a biased network. They get their news from the internet or from network broadcasts that actually do have news stories that don’t pander to the left or right. I do believe a lot of non-Fox watching Conservatives do the same. I mean, Fox News gets 5 million viewers on a good night? Good for cable news, but everyone else is watching CSI.

  • 1maddog

she would probably have a case if fox doesnt have any dykes at the station

  • gk33435

Fox: The most trusted name in news, by people who can’t or don’t read very well. Give them a word over two syllables, and they think you’re elitist…oops, there’s a few!!!

  • errxn

Wow. So Fox News is horribly biased, yet Rachel Maddow should be hosting Meet the Press. I guess “biased” really means “doesn’t agree with my viewpoint,” then, eh?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Don-Wayne/100000582413939 Don Wayne

So Rachel criticizes Fox for “advocacy journalism” and “activism.” She really makes a good point. Now excuse me while I go watch her 25th show on gays in the military.

Rach, your buddy Keith just did a ten minute diatribe about the tea partiers being racist, because there aren’t any black faces in the crowd. Funny, but back when they were showing the crowd at Reverend Wright’s church, that didn’t exactly look like a melting pot either. I’m sure instead of being biased, Keith simply overlooked it.

  • shootfromthehip

Funny, it seems for all the crying cons do about how nobody watches MSNBC yet it sure seems like they are all up on what happens on “Countdown” every night.

So, writer, how was it watching Keith on “Countdown” last night? Were you one of the “nobody watches” part of the audience or the “hardly anyone watches” audience?

  • The Real Royal King

True, Shoot From the Hip, but the right is often more interested in demonizing than promoting. Look at the FOX Fan Klub site. Entry upon entry not offering anything new, but merely criticizing those who offer an analytical view of FOX. Goodness, one poster’s sole mission is to do just that and nothing else. Similarly, an affiliated, entire anti-Olbermann site. It’s an interesting marketing strategy for FOX, and there is no doubt it has worked well along with the “fair and balanced” heaping pile, but what long term? Alka Seltzer built its brand by advertising its own product (“relief is just a swallow away”) not talking about how crappy Bromo Seltzer is.

  • writer

Shoot, I watch both. O’Reilly and Hannity have on opposing viewpoints. Olbermann doesn’t. Is that fair and balanced? And if someone is totally unimportant, as the left says Sarah Palin is, why the obsession and constant attacks?

  • Facebook User

Olbermann shows more fairness and balance because he presents FACTS with evidence to back up statements. Many times, O’Reilly and Hannity will latch onto assumptions and conspiracy theories because they are so desperate to attack liberals. FACTS are the biggest enemy of the conservatives and far-right… they hate FACTS because they barely use them and when they do, it makes them look bad.

  • MichelleF

Jim R, I would put Megyn Kelly up against Rachel ANY day of the week and gladly watch her clean her clock.

And Facebook User, I’m still trying to figure out if your post is for real or if you are telling a VERY funny joke.
