Revealed: McChrystal Banned Fox News From His Headquarters

Now that Gen. McChrystal is officially out and Gen. Petraeus has taken the reins, juicy little tidbits (that, to be honest, might not have otherwise interested prior to the Rolling Stone piece) about McChrystal are making the blogosphere rounds.

Buried in a longish post by Marc Ambinder about the aftermath of the McChrystal removal was this little morsel: McChrystal apparently was not a fan of Fox News.

Now it can be told. The story about him voting for Obama is not contrived. He is a political liberal. He is a social liberal. He banned Fox News from the television sets in his headquarters. Yes, really. This serves to put to rest another false rumor: that McChrystal deliberately precipitated his firing because he wants to run for President.

No word on what he watched instead.

This does make the story a little more interesting. An (apparently) unabashed liberal, fighting against a liberal President and administration, who won’t let him do his job. An Obama supporter who thinks he’s doing a poor job, is over his head, and is failing as Commander-In-Chief.

Now THAT could be a sign of bad things to come for the Obama administration…

  • MichelleF

The comments for this thread should be fun. On the one hand, the libs hate McChrystal, but on the other hand, he’s bashing Fox. Now they will find themselves in the uncomfortable position of having to agree with the general. Let the fun begin!!

  • paulmdoro

So for the conservs Michelle is McChrystal a credible general with valid complaints or just a liberal loon who deserved to get fired? Let the fun begin!

  • MichelleF

    Paul,
I think I’ve talked about this many times, but I can do it again. I don’t think he should done the article, period. I’ve never said a single word about his politics because I didn’t think it mattered if he was doing his job.

  • tjl

Sorry MichelleF, most liberals aren’t as highly partisan as you are. We can disagree with each other from time to time and not always toe the party line. I’m sure your tea bag talking points that come in the mail in the morning — yes, I imagine the tea baggers still use snail mail — are to be followed at any cost. But we liberals can disagree with Billy McChrystal in the way he went about opening up his big mouth but also agree with him that Fox News is the new Nickelodeon. Simple television for simple minds!

I don’t hate McChrystal, by the way. But I don’t agree with the way he went about speaking out against the administration. Simple.

And yes, ImNotSmart, some liberals aren’t happy with Obama has done his job. We aren’t as one-sided as you and your tea bagging friends are.

  • MichelleF

Yes tjl, clearly you aren’t highly partisan.

  • paulmdoro

Let’s try and have civil conservations please. There’s no cause for insulting people.

  • sarainitaly

McChrystal seems to be a credible General and I would take his word and experience about military matters over a community organizer, any day.

That said, he does have the Tillman issue attached to him. And he has made a few verbal gaffes, but he was speaking about the inexperience and ridiculousness of the Obama administration so I am ok with that. haha

The fact that he was fooled by the hope and change love train is a matter of concern…. But it seems he quickly realized that Obama was not up for the job, and the O administration doesn’t know what they are doing.

The guy, no matter his politics, has served his country well. He has served for 35 years, is a 4 star general and an over all bad ass. It’s unfortunate his CIC and WH administration was so detached, inexperienced and ill prepared that McChrystal felt and expressed what he did, which ultimately led to his resignation/firing.

  • paulmdoro

“but he was speaking about the inexperience and ridiculousness of the Obama administration so I am ok with that”

So McChrystal’s credibility is determined by how he feels about Obama? That’s not partisan at all.

  • zumpano

Teabaggers don’t use snail mail; it’s run by the “guv-mit”!

  • Bootleghaircut

    BOTTOM LINE-

WHAT KIND OF MORON GENERAL TALKS TO ROLLING STONE??? REGARDLESS OF PARTISAN
POLITICS YOU DON’T DO THAT. CLEARLY FROM THE COMMENTS NOBODY HAS BEEN IN THE MILITARY OR YOU WOULD KNOW THAT. HENCE WHY HE HAD TO GO. PERIOD. A FINE MAN, BUT HE MADE A BIG MISTAKE.

MOST AMUSING TO ME IS THAT HE WENT TO ROLLING STONE AND NOT FOX AND NOW THAT OI HEAR HE BANNED FOX FROM HIS CP WELL BRAVO AND BULLY GENERAL!!! SEEMS YOU’RE EVEN SMARTER THAN YOU LOOK.

IF YOU PEOPLE KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT THE MILITARY YOU WOULD REALIZE THE AFGHAN PLAN IS IN MOTION AND THE BEAUTY OF OUR SYSTEM ALLOWS FOR FLEXIBILITY FROM GENERAL TO PRIVATE TO CARRY OUT THE MISSION. WE DONT NEED MCCHYSTAL AT THIS POINT.

THE WAR GOES ON-IF YOU WANT TO WIN IT-STOP POLITICIZING EVERY DECISION. REMEMBER VIETNAM? EH? CONSERVATIVES HAVE LEARNED NOTHHING SINCE THEN IT WOULD SEEM.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kam-Fet/572005492 Kam Fet

Ha ha ha, are the right wingers still defending his actions. Now they’d be jumping ship, now that they found out he’s not one of them. The hypocrisy Bernie Goldberg was talking about would be more apparent now. lol

  • Phocus2

Well, if it’s true that he banned Fox, he is as dumb as giving Rolling Stone access makes him look. This guy is perhaps at his best when he is on the ground shooting his gun, instead of making decisions.

  • Thomas G Williams

Glad he had FAUX turned off and he still blew it, and it was not just Tillman he made a number of mistakes before in the area of his command responsibilities which got over shadowed by the Tillman incident and the aftermath from that, this time around he was only being lightly criticized for the excessive time it was taking to mount operations.

BTW: Around Atlanta there has been a campaign to turn off FAUX at fast food places and other gathering places because it made even conservatives feel as if it was being pushed on people when they did not want it and at the Mc Ds it was to stop the exposure to children. Also a few lawsuits were filed to turn it off in PUBLIC BLDGS where it was considered to be politically partisan and wrong for it to be pushed in TAX PAYER PROVIDED offices and citizen services areas, they even had to issue a special warning to poll workers not to play political talk shows during VOTING.

  • roxsteady

Yes, whether he’s a Liberal doesn’t really matter. He’s a damn liar and this wasn’t the first time he stuck his foot in his mouth. The President out ranks the General and everyone else in the military. This isn’t North Korea where the military runs the country! The one good thing to be said about him was that he clearly wasn’t one of the idiots who tolerated fox news’ bullshit. Like the President, he recognized that they aren’t a real news organization. Keep taking shots at the President but, he still has his job. Suck on that losers!

I see that this thread has taken the high road. Good job at showing intellectual superiority while making the points that back your individual opinions.

This may be off-point of the article, but, when I signed up at Mediaite a few days ago, I was bragging about this site to my friends and family, at how people here seemed to be able to disagree without getting personal and ugly, unlike posters on some other news sites. Both sides here seemed to respect each other and disagree without being disagreeable. But looking at some of the comments here, boy, was I wrong. Same crap, different site. Ugly pettiness. Where has all the inteliigent discourse gone?

nIce to see republican continue to show how truly ignorant they are, unamerican, and have low IQ’s.

And exactly what did I get wrong there?

“McChrystal was the head of Special Operations command in Afghanistan when Army Ranger and former football star Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire. He approved the paperwork awarding Tillman a Silver Star for dying in the line “of enemy fire” — and he was “accountable for the inaccurate and misleading assertions” contained therein, according to an investigation — despite knowing (or at least suspecting) that Tillman had died in an episode of fratricide. That episode barely registered with the public or, for that matter, Congress, when McChrystal went before the Senate Armed Services Committee waiting to take over control in Afghanistan. The one person who questioned whether more answers were needed was journalist Jon Krakauer who had just penned a book on Tillman’s death and thought the general’s explanations were “preposterous” and “unbelievable.”

And excuse me, but WTF is this: “nIce to see republican continue to show how truly ignorant they are, unamerican, and have low IQ’s.”

I am not a Republican, I am not ignorant, un-American nor do i have a low IQ. Talk about ignorant….

Sara, as a general rule, I wouldn’t try to “debate” anyone with the word LOON in his name. But hey, it’s your time, sister!

  • paulmdoro

Krakauer’s book about Tillman is excellent. He was quite a guy. There’s a documentary about him coming out later this year as well.

  • sarainitaly

  • ChuckfromTacoma

tjl and bootleg, I do not see where Steele’s comment about Ratigan were in any way a personal assault on any posters here. Perhaps a shot between the eyes of a tv host is a little harsh, but again not an insult towards you (unless, of course you are the tv guy posting here as another).

  • temple62

You’re next Obama. I am voting against any Dem or GOP that publicly has supported this action. This narcissistic immigrant dodged a meeting with McChrystal last year and this told me that the “amateur” president elect was not at all serious about Afghanistan strategies, support needs or the troops. This man will never get my vote for any public office, he has betrayed that trust!

  • paulmdoro

It’s surreal to see someone try and lecture others in adult behavior and conservations as they continually hurl insults and nonsensical gibberish. If you don’t like what I have to say, ignore it. It’s that simple. And it would also help if some people took their own advice.

  • paulmdoro

Thank you so much for the advice Bootleghaircut. I will take it under careful advisement. I read somewhere that people who continuously insult others on the Internet are the most mentally stable and trustworthy in America.

I have to respect the general..but I sure don’t like him. He was a good Ranger and special ops commander. He never got the political aspect to his new position, fish out of water so to speak. He never should have made those remarks to a reporter and he needed to lose his job. More and more special forces troops are leaving the service..the job is too hard to serve under incompetents such as these..I’m just saying.

  • tiredofbs

IMHO McChrystal made these comments fully aware of the consequences.
Does he look like a fool? The King of Black ops…
He made his opinion/protest well known, & walks away w/his honor ,
hoping changes are made to Rules Of Engagement among other needed…
Obama praised him like a god. Thats big in ObamaLand. Very telling.

On Fox thing, did not want to be labeled, Right or Left.. hence the NoFox TvNews..

Here we go…As I stated above,
McChrystal thought his hands were tied, he did not want to Lose A Mission…
As a result changes are already in the works:

withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in July 2011, the date he has set for

  • TfT

What I’m wondering is if the democrats will claim, like they did with Adm Fallon: “independent leader who is willing to make honest assessments of this Administration’s strategic policies”.

“Admiral Fallon’s decision to resign is yet one more example of this Administration silencing our top military”

I wonder if Senator Akaka, D, will ask the same question, except replace Admiral Fallon with General McChrystal.

I know, I know; it ain’t gonna happen….just sayin that the dems have one position on military leaders when they speak out against a republican President and a different position when they speak out against a democrat President.

Obama had to reach back to Bush’s main General in hopes of achieving success. Which is overall, the absolute funniest thing in the world – for once Obama can say: “IT’s Bush’s fault” and he would be right.

to michelle no the fun is going to be seeing the libs suddenly loving Petraeus because its obama who has now picked him to handle the war, the lib media went crazy today with what a brilliant move it was for obama to do this, how wonderful to pick General Petraeus, it was all glowing, loving over obama , how presidential he was, what a joke, when their hatred for him when it was President Bush who picked him, and move-on now taking off the ad they had used for the GENERAL BETRAYUS when he was PRESIDENT BUSH’S general, talk about hypocritical, doesn’t matter now, obama is going down slowly, as the democrats also, even the liberal nbc poll just taken asking 1000 likely voters preference gop-56% democrats- 35%, so libs get ready, people have buyers remorse for this president and are sick of what he and his cohorts are doing to this country, going downnnnnnnnnn
