President-elect Donald Trump has just tweeted that America needs to increase its focus on nuclear weapons.

The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes

UPDATE – 1:03 p.m. ET: As it happens, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered commentary about his own nuclear arsenal recently, and they carry similar implications to those of Trump’s tweet.

Agence France-Presse highlighted a military defense meeting where Putin was quoted saying “We need to strengthen the military potential of strategic nuclear forces, especially with missile complexes that can reliably penetrate any existing and prospective missile defense systems.” The meeting also featured discussions on how Russia’s involvement in the war in Syria allowed them to test the capabilities of new warfare technologies.
