U.S. Government To Archive All Public ‘Tweets’ From Twitter

A testament to the world we live in: the Library of Congress has decided it will now begin to catalogue all tweets available publicly in their archives, elevating Twitter not only to the status of an indispensable news aggregator and celebrity stalking device, but to an anthopological record worthy of a major national library.

As Josh Levs explains in the below CNN report, the idea is to save all tweets to catch the most “historic” ones, like the first tweet of all time, Barack Obama‘s first tweet as president-elect, and the thousands of tweets that kept the world abreast of the tumultuous post-election situation in Iran. That said, every single tweet, no matter how mundane or embarrassing, will be kept on the record, just in case, so it’s not crazy to suspect some media personalities (David Shuster, Ezra Klein, and Sen. Chuck Grassley) may not be too happy about this development.

50 years from now, people will wonder why the Library of Congress has a bunch of records of people talking about taking a shit that exact moment, or how they think they saw Johnny Depp in a dinner somewhere but it was really an upside down broom. What a waste… then again, someone has to do it.

Obama was opposed to the Patriot Act, until he became President. Now the Democrats want to monitor and spy…but (here’s the laugh) not on Islamic terrorists, but the Moms and Pops who might vote against the Democrats in an election. Forget about nukes in Iran, Obama wants to improve his surveillance of Twitter!
