Political Aide, Feminist, Author Liz Carpenter Dies At 89

Sad news this morning: Liz Carpenter, who worked as an aide under Lyndon Johnson‘s administration and press secretary to Lady Bird Johnson, died yesterday of pneumonia. Mrs. Carpenter was involved in several women’s rights movements, including one to allow women into the National Press Club and as the founding member for the National Women’s Caucus.
Before working with Johnson on the Kennedy ticket, she worked as a political journalist on the D.C. beat for a news org she started with her husband, Les Carpenter, and her role in the original Johnson/Kennedy campaign, she was said, “was to take those funny-talking Kennedy ladies from Massachusetts, with Lady Bird at the helm, and hit Texas and other states in the Bible Belt and prove that Roman Catholics didn’t have horns and tails.” She was in the motorcade when Kennedy was slain and later rode on Air Force One with his body.
