Swiss Private Banker Hands Offshore Bank Account Info To WikiLeaks
Here’s a pretty big get for WikiLeaks, Julian Assange‘s polarizing document-leaking database: A former banker in Switzerland named Rudolf Elmer has handed the organization information concerning several offshore bank account holders. His motive? Apparently, he “wanted to draw attention to financial abuses.”
Elmer formerly oversaw the office of Julius Baer in the Cayman Islands – a notorious hotbed of “sketchy” offshore accounts – up until being fired in 2002. His former employer claims Elmer is out for revenge as he currently awaits trial for breaching bank secrecy.
Elmer, however, points to a more altruistic motive:
I want to let our society know what I do know because it’s damaging our society in a way that money is moved away by financial institutions, multinational conglomerates and high-net-worth individuals, money is hidden in offshore ventures.
Assange says WikiLeaks will “take a couple of weeks” to vet and verify Elmer’s information before making it public.
