Swiss Private Banker Hands Offshore Bank Account Info To WikiLeaks

Here’s a pretty big get for WikiLeaks, Julian Assange‘s polarizing document-leaking database: A former banker in Switzerland named Rudolf Elmer has handed the organization information concerning several offshore bank account holders. His motive? Apparently, he “wanted to draw attention to financial abuses.”

Elmer formerly oversaw the office of Julius Baer in the Cayman Islands – a notorious hotbed of “sketchy” offshore accounts – up until being fired in 2002. His former employer claims Elmer is out for revenge as he currently awaits trial for breaching bank secrecy.

Elmer, however, points to a more altruistic motive:

I want to let our society know what I do know because it’s damaging our society in a way that money is moved away by financial institutions, multinational conglomerates and high-net-worth individuals, money is hidden in offshore ventures.

Assange says WikiLeaks will “take a couple of weeks” to vet and verify Elmer’s information before making it public.

Here’s video from Reuters:

This is going to be good, can’t wait to see the who, what, where and when.

    So….game changer.

Assange thinks he needs to worry about some government coming after him. Heh. If he’s going to expose individuals, companies, and political entities that have hidden untold millions in offshore accounts he’s got bigger problems that a jail cell.

    Oops.

    Popcorn, anyone?

I hope he gets them published before Cheney, et al, send the boys from Xe to visit. That sound you hear is the sound of billions and billions flying around the electronic banking system, trying to lose the Blade Runner that is chasing it.

You know what’s funny? There’s been so much outrage over Wikileaks… and so much about how Assange is the devil… yet, what’s the source on about 85% of most of the actual news to come to the fore of late? Yep, Wikileaks. Suddenly media that was doing nothing but urging Americans to inspect their own belly lint is exposing all kind of information they should have hunted down a long time ago. And then turning around to curse Wikileaks yet again, for giving it to them. How ironic.
