Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band Open The Grammys

THE BOSS

New Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band opened up Sunday night’s Grammy Awards with a rousing rendition of “We Take Care of Our Own,” the first single off his upcoming album, Wrecking Ball. The performance was met with a standing ovation, along with cheers of “Bruuuuce” from the crowd.

I love Bruce, have since ‘Born To Run,’ have been to numerous of his concerts. Heck, I’ve even made money off him, he had dinner at my restaurant once. But I gotta say, when I heard the album version of this song I thought it was the most mediocre song he had ever written and recorded. I was hoping a live version would but some life into it, but I’m afraid it still sounds lifeless and dull, just a second-rate rehash of his best stuff (and his best is better then anyone else).

The one thing I got from this song some may not agree with..He’s evidently a member of the Christian Left. Thankfully.

Thematically it’s a rehash sure….live performance rocked the Grammys..plenty of energy and life…what did you want him to do set himself on fire?

That was one of Springsteen’s best songs.  I loved it.

    Who gives a F*ck???

It was yet another forgettable awful Springsteen song. All his songs sound alike..like the same lousy song.

  • Anonymous

Actually thats not true. He has a zillion songs and most of them don’t sound alike at all.

I think Kim brings up a really insightful point. Thanks for joining in on the discussion.

BTW, Kim, who do you think will win the Michigan GOP primary?

I could never “dis” Bruce. So I won’t put this performance down. The guy’s over 60 years old for chrissakes. But still no one should put Bruce down who hasn’t seen him in his prime. Here’s a classic live performance. Many of you have probably seen it because once upon a time, MTV used to play this video. If you can imagine that. This video really captures the excitement of Springsteen live and in his prime and shows what an electrifying performer he once was. Love the end when the ladies attack him.

Do they still make black Levis? Loved his music up till 9/11.

  • Anonymous

No, but I do expect him to set fire to the song, which he didn’t To see what can be done with middling material check out the Adele clip.

I’m a very long time, devoted fan of Bruce and feel the same way as BeggarBoy.  I like the message he’s giving with this song, but musically it’s pretty lame.  It feels like a generic, watered-down Bruce standard…the “formula.”  Of his political songs, I would take Born in he USA or Lost in the Flood over this one any day.  I hope the rest of the album is better.  :-/  I was hoping for another Devils & Dust-ish tour, ah well….

    Springsteen is great!

No one combines politics and the personal better then Bruce and he can be transcendent. On the Madison Square Garden HBO DVD the one/two punch of Youngstown segueing into Murder Incorporated blows me away every time. I feel like I’m being kicked in the stomach and sent to Heaven at the same time.

Just for fun. Though I know most of you shitheads left and right don’t care.

Why is 9/11 the dividing point where you would no longer like his music?  I mean his music only.  It seems you mean his politics.  On The Rising (seen by many as Bruce’s 9/11 album)  it seems to me politics take a back seat to feelings of loss, the desire for revenge, and eventually redemption.  Oh and if I am off on the wrong tangent here and you really just don’t like the sound of the music, sorry I just like it anyway.

    Obligatory: BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE !

I still like his music but when performers bring politics into the mix in the middle of thier career it just looses something. He certaintly didn’t gain anything by it. On the other hand there have been many greats built on being political. Rock on!

    btw. RIP Big Man

Hes always had some type of social commentary in his songs going back to at least Darkness on The Edge of Town in 1978. The RIver, Nebraska, of Course Born in the USA and so forth have been filled with political and social commentary way before the Rising in 2001. Not sure if you listen to Bruce all that much.

  • Anonymous

Agreed the rising was a political album but it never took sides. It was just a commentary on what he was feeling and what he felt others were feeling at the time. People are funny everyone is a liberal boogeyman with hidden agendas anymore.

Not too much these days. Anything pre Tunnel of Love. You know as well as I do that his attitude has changed. He went from music with a message to a message with music. The music tonight was nothing new.

Bruce has always been Bruce. Born in the USA is probably his most political song ever. Not sure how any singer song writer comes up with new stuff for 40 years that makes everyone happy. Nebraska brings up capital punishment, the river brings up pre marital sex and its consequences. Even Tunnel of Love has political and social themes in it. Better than singing a sappy love song on every track. Pop music critics always fascinate me, there seems to always be a backlash against those who have a long career, because it appears they rehash their old stuff. Rock-n-roll in general and pop music is always being rehashed and redone. Its not complex music and never was meant to be. People always want to put their music heros in a box and freeze them at a specific moment in their lives when they were most affected by the music. Oh well you say potato.

Awards may have gone to modern day pop schlock, but the performances by Bruce, McCartney and a reunited Beach Boys made it a great show.

I read this new song is one the Obama campaign will be using. Perfect for the times.

I am a Bruce fan since he came to the UK in 1975 and have travelled all over the world including US to see him because there is no better performer and every concert is a party.  Bruce has always been political and its why people like me feel so connected. Some of his songs are samey, including this latest one and I can’t say I’m enthralled by it. I understand its supposed to be ironic but that doesn’t come across and if a little Englander doesn’t get it I don’t think many in the US will, where irony is almost never understood which is why people over here say Americans have no sense of humour. Maybe it’ll grow on me, but if not there’s hundreds of other songs to be enjoyed. See you on the world tour Bruce.

the very definition of unoriginality…  bombastically derivative…  had he never existed there would be no void whatsoever on the musical landscape…  other than the lack of tired-ass musings from a political simpleton posing as the spokesperson of a generation…
