Good question….when did Chris Matthews move the Far Left? Hard to identify the exact moment, but that is definitely where he operates nowadays. Those who only know Matthews today might find it hard to believe that there was a time when he wasn’t 100% predictable in his opinions and — even more surprising, given his current approach — when he engaged in dialogue on big issues. Nowadays, he is just another mud-slinging ideologue no different from the rest of the MSNBC cadre of true believers.

I’ve been watching his show since the late 90′s (and read him the SF Chronicle for years before that) and his politics have definitely turned sharply to the partisan left. A few months ago he had Howard Fineman and former McCain media advisor Mark McKinnon on his show, and at the end of the discussion Matthews characterized McKinnon as a man of the “center right” (this guy who refused to offer his services in opposition to Obama) and then Fineman as “…well, I’m not really sure where you stand on the political spectrum.” Even Fineman looked embarressed.

Also, I don’t think you can underestimate the pressure the left puts on people in the media. I think Mika Brzinzski is a good example. As you, writer, have pointed out: unless you are completely in line with them, you are a considered either a dupe or traitor. The left takes its politics very seriously and there are no friends to the right.

Years ago, Newsweek pointed out that people (real people) hold a mix of liberal and conservative beliefs/attitudes. The best example of this is that even the most liberal of people understand and support the idea of a balanced budget. They are also sold on capitalism as the most natural and efficient way of DISTRIBUTING wealth. (Distributing is in caps because that word sounds socialist, but it isn’t.) No one tells you that because it makes liberals human, and reasonable.

Conservatives can be atheists, but don’t tell the Christian right that. Conservatives can also be gay, or black, or Hispanic, but don’t tell an extreme liberal that. Meanwhile, just about everyone now agrees that during the Bush administration, Republicans only pretended to be conservative at budget time.

Our problem is that politicians are driven to the extremes by the voters who demand purity at primary time. This winnows out the more reasonable potential politicians who have mixed views about abortion, God in government, and a minimum social safety net.

Back to Chris Matthews. I cannot stand to watch his program because he is so full of his own ideas that he won’t let his guests finish a sentence. Even someone who supports his ideas gets drowned out by Matthews’ constant interruptions. It gets to the point that he drowns himself out.

I conclude that his enthusiasm for his own ideas is extreme.

Y’ think somebody might have gotten a clue where Matthews stands on the political spectrum when he got chills listening to Obama speak?
