CNN Reports: U.S. Investigators Determine North Korea Behind Sony Hack

CNN’s Evan Perez reported Wednesday afternoon what many have suspected all along. According to U.S. investigators, the North Korean government was behind the cyber-attack on Sony Pictures that ultimately led to the cancelation of The Interview’s theatrical release today.

“U.S. investigators determined that the attack against Sony was the work of hackers working on behalf of the North Korean government,” Perez reported, saying he expects there will be an official announcement from U.S. government sources tomorrow. “Obviously, you know, nothing happens in North Korea without orders from the leadership of the regime. They control the internet there, so there’s no way this attack could have been done by anyone other than if it was ordered by the leadership of that country.”

“It’s a major thing,” Perez said of Sony’s decision to scrap the film’s release following terror threats on theaters, “because you’re talking about U.S. freedom of speech that is under attack basically from North Korea.”

Curiously, just as CNN aired its report, Wired published a comprehensive article positing that North Korea “almost certainly did not hack Sony.”
