CNN’s Parker Spitzer Marks Big Ratings Gains–While Kathleen Parker Was Out Sick

ratings

Cable news ratings, February 3, 2011:

•It’s turning into a banner week for the oft-bashed CNN show Parker Spitzer. Again Thursday, Eliot Spitzer hosted the show and focused on breaking news from Egypt. (Kathleen Parker, the show’s co-host, has not been on the show all week–out sick, say CNN execs) Fast-paced and newsy, Parker Spitzer sans Parker beat MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell with 325,000 viewers 25-54 Thursday–93,000 more viewers than O’Donnell.

The week’s ratings wins mark Parker Spitzer‘s best ratings since the show’s launch last year–by a lot. The show’s highest average rating in 2010 was 159,000. In January the numbers bumped up to 174,000, though that was not enough to pull the show out of third place. This week, the average rating is over 274,000. That represents a 68 percent jump from last week, when Parker was on the set. Surely the news from Egypt is the largest factor in the jump, but not having one’s face on the air when your show is hitting its highest viewership; well, that could make you sick.

•MSNBC again found its entire revamped primetime lineup in third place Thursday, with Rachel Maddow falling behind CNN’s Piers Morgan among both viewers 25-54 and total viewers, and Ed Schultz a distant third at 10 p.m., 280,000 viewers 25-54 behind the timeslot winner, CNN’s Anderson Cooper. Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren, who usually wins the timeslot, was only narrowly in second place, just 3,000 viewers 25-54 behind AC 360.

You mention Egypt, but this article still seems to ignore that whenever there is a major crisis like what’s going on in Egypt, CNN’s ratings spike. From all the people who normally don’t follow cable news, but remember that network they saw in the airport.

Then they go back to normal. NEWS!

  • BFD

    This is good news.

This means with the combined totals of CNN and MSNBC more viewers are getting real news than the fake news at Fox.

Kathleen Parker may be a delightful person and a talented writer, but unfortunately she is just not that great on TV. And as much as I loathe Eliot Spitzer, I have to admit he is really, really good. CNN has some decisions to make.

There’s going to be an issue or an incident where Fox News is exposed for the piece of shit it is… and then finally people will start moving away from it… either that or ratings will slowly decline as Fox News viewers die or are sent into nursing homes.

Almost no one from the younger generations watches Fox because.. well, they’re too smart. They’re still “effected” by seeing scienfitic data. If a younger person saw that an adult, Sarah Palin, wrote answers on her hand for a debate, they would laugh at this behavior and call her an idiot. The Tea Baggers don’t do that, bizarrely, they find her stupidity endearing.

Older people’s brains are harder to change.. so the people watching Fox News for 10 years sort of have permanent brain damage. THey are unretrievable. It’s morbid but we just have to wait till they pass away.

This is the new lib talking point; completely averse to their argument that there is no liberal bias in media.

” But if you add up all the lib channels they have more viewers than FOX!”

And if Grandma had balls , she would be Grandpa.

Poor libs- they can’t stand it that there is just one, there is just ONE channel that does not carry their propaganda!

Shows how little confidence they have in their message.

I totally agree. They need a more telegenic bombastic conservative woman on the show to counter Spitzer. Ann Coulter would be good although probably too much of a provocateur. Peggy Noonan is great but she’s too mellow on TV.

Luckily the same people that were against stem cell research are also the ones that could have been saved by it and lived longer. They sort of dug their own grave eh? Healthcare too, so many Fox News viewers will die from not being covered in their healthcare, or denied by their healthcare… and it’s all their doing.

Same with social security and medicare. Watch as the old people complain now of socialism.. but they’re just hurting themselves in the future, Soon medicare and social security will be gone and the old will have to work until they are nearly dead. Republicans are also trying to reduce the minimum wage XD making their situation even worse.

So many old people will go bankrupt because they don’t want “socialized” medicine and it’s going to be the people that voted against it.. yikes.

You get to decide who is a conservative? You people just hate Kathleen because she came out and said how stupid and irresponsible it was to support Palin for the highest office of the land. You people HATE criticism from your very own people. That’s why David Frum was kicked out of AEI for criticizing Fox News.

No – Frum, Brooks, KP and even Noonan at points are just not conservative folks. Just like that guy, Avlon, that CNN has on its programs occasionally isn’t a moderate.

The fact is CNN and MSNBC have done some great reporting this week, examining the Egypt situation from all sides, being critical (of Obama or Mubarek or the Muslim Brotherhood) where it is needed.

Fox has spent the last week trying to push the narrative that, like always, this is all Obama’s fault.

And you have the nerve to talk about propaganda?

Actually, CNN has been the only one really covering the story. Fox is the only one covering it from the “After” aftermath. And no offense, but Obama has been making his presence known, thus “making Mubarak” mad and has miscalculated what Mubarak’s moves have been. Unless, there’s behind-the-scenes actions going on, which I’m betting there are.

This is no coincidence and it’s not due to Egypt. The sad fact is that Kathleen Parker is completely unwatchable. She has zero personality and is not even slightly engaging. As vile as Eliot Spitzer is in real life, he is interesting to watch. Kathleen Parker should be required viewing for all nursing home patients. They would easily fall asleep with no need for pharmacologic agents.

How long before MSNBC pulls O’Donnell from the 8pm time slot, and who do you put there?

That is one HORRIBLY produced show in my opinion. Compare the production quality of the Last Word with the O’Reilly Factor. It is night and day. With that said. O’Donnell is very intelligent, but he lacks charisma. It will be interesting to see the longevity of this show.

Not a fair comparison on the production bit. O’Donnell does his show LIVE unlike Bill. I agree with the rest though. I think Larry should re-format the show. He has great writing skills (+great political knowledge from actually working in congress) that could be put to even greater use. Also, Republicans and conservatives seem more comfortable coming to his show since he isn’t as pugnacious so his viewership shouldn’t be as polarized as KO’s was.

Why would I read Red State. I’m a Hotair fan. There are things with Red State that I don’t agree with at all. However, you don’t gain credibility as a conservative by being featured on Liberal networks such as CNN and MSNBC. And I think that the viewers get to decide if a show is conservative or liberal enough for them. :)

  • TfT

I haven’t watched the show with Spitzer running solo, but CNN has had to have awakened and realieazed they can’t put Parker out there as the conservative against a rabid democrat like the disgraced, resigned Governor. All Parker does is bash Palin and giggle. A faux con up against a rabid dem doesn’t cut it as a balanced show.

CNN either needs to get a real conservative or can the whole concept.

Also, I don’t think this is a good week to determine the success of P/S because CNN’s numbers are up due to Egypt. P/S is still a failure.

  • Georgia999

Good to see E.D. Hill on the TV screen again. She is smart and articulate and if she were paired with Spitzer, many would watch and ratings would go up. I think she got a bad rap from FOXNews when she made an off-handed (forgot-what-it-was) comment. They lost a good host when they let her go.
