David Letterman ‘Doesn’t Like It’ When Brian Williams Goes On Jay Leno’s Show

NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams was a guest on CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman last night and the cross network appearance was a major theme of the discussion.

From the very first question, Letterman (armed with his Jay Leno impression) joked at his rival’s expense while Williams played the role of mediator.

“You probably go on the Jay Leno show, don’t you?” asked Letterman to start the interview. “I do,” said Williams. “We have a robust slate of evening programming.”

“But I don’t like it when you go on that show,” said Letterman, leading to a discussion as to why New York is better than L.A., Leno’s garage and how Williams has transitioned into Tom Brokaw‘s role so well.

But the main point from Letterman revolved around this: “I like to think of you and me as more real guys, as opposed to you and Jay.”

Williams does a good job of deflecting the harshest critiques of Leno from Letterman and playing along when he could. From his SNL guest hosting stint to his “Slow-Jamming The News” with The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Williams shines in late night appearances. Even when the topic is awkward.

Here’s the beginning of the interview (via Gawker TV):

Brian Williams is one of my favorite media people. He’s informative and can also be hilarious.

Don’t miss him on the Daily Show tonight!

Letterman: “I like to think of you and me as more real guys, as opposed to you and Jay.”

Dave, is Brian Williams keeping it real by cheating on his wife with female staffers of his show over whom he has authority, like you did? Maybe Dave, that’s a little too real for Brian.

Brian Williams has the best one-liners of anyone in the news biz.

When Katie Couric was on NBC, she and Leno switched places for a day. Maybe Jay should switch roles with Williams for a day. Then we’ll finally have someone funny hosting “The Tonight Show.”

Letterman is in last place in all demos….because of Dave’s shit political agenda!

I used to love Dave, before he made it known he was a liberal. And I dont mean by bashing Bush, thats comedic gold for all comedians, I mean just by pushing an agenda, propping up the left, downplaying anything that has to do with the right. Its sad seeing him go down this path when he used to be king in the 90s. Just makes you wonder how things would have turned out if he had just gotten the tonight show after Carson left.
But Brian Williams is really quick recovering from an awkward conversation. Thats what makes it funny.

It seems there was once a time, not too long ago, where every single aspect of our lives didn’t revolve around Washington DC and Politics, but those times are long, long gone.

    Where did they go?
