David Letterman Pitches Katie Couric To Stay On CBS: Anchor Chair Is Not A ‘Temp Gig’

While some predict that Katie Couric‘s career at CBS will not last much longer, others like David Letterman refuse to give up hope. Couric appeared last night with Letterman and confirmed her contract is up in June and that she is exploring her options. Some disappointment was heard from the crowd and Letterman asked “you can’t leave the network can you?”

Letterman’s impassioned plea to Couric to stay:

“Let me tell you something, once you take the anchor chair – that’s what you do. . . . It’s not like it’s a temp gig. Look at Walter Cronkite. Look at Tom Brokaw. Look at Brian Williams. Look at Peter Jennings. Look at all these people. They get in it, they saddle up and they ride into the sunset.”

Couric laughed and smiled and there were many awkward silences. Letterman even suggested Couric “can’t just pull the rug out from under the viewers” and that viewers won’t want to adjust to a new anchor. Letterman surprisingly has become a true company man, and makes a convincing case for Couric to stay in the CBS family. However, Couric’s uncomfortable body language throughout the interview sure does seem to hint that other opportunities are likely to be on the horizon.

I’m sure I’ll be in the minority on this one, but I think Katie Couric has gotten the raw end of the deal since she took the CBS job.

The media critics decided to write her off before even seeing one show.

She’s a decent reporter and her broadcast has gotten better with each passing month since she got there.

She’s not my favorite anchor, but I think the harshness of the criticism towards her has been unwarranted.

I laughed out loud watching this.
Do you realize that Letterman & Couric are the two most OVERPAID people on television. Yet there they were, together, Katie flashing her $15M smile, and Dave again proving he’s ther most easily indoctrinated (fooled) person on television.

Why did CBS hire an elf in the first place?

Where will they ever find another liberal in New York?

CBS is third or fourth rated news show. Considering CBS’s lack of credibility, Katie Courick seems to be the perfect pick. Why pay of a pro-, when you can hire to the level of your need?

When you pay someone millions of dollars per year, you expect consummate professionalism and RESULTS. Couric has shown neither.

Quota hiring hangover. How in hell do you think Robert Reisch and Madeline Halfbright got their jobs?
