Egyptian Broadcaster Cited for ‘Inappropriate’ Bra Strap
Egypt’s queasiness with journalism doesn’t end with the “fake news” of Al Jazeera producers: it now reportedly includes women’s clothing.
Egyptian broadcaster Bothaina Kamel, also the first female presidential candidate in Egypt’s 2012 election, made what some called an “inappropriate” appearance on television in which her bra strap appears to have fallen down her shoulder.
Conflicting reports indicate that Kamel could be the subject of an “investigation,” though the head of Egypt’s news sector Safaa Hegazy said that she had instead been reprimanded about an appearance that “does not comply to criteria of appearing on screen.”
Kamel’s lawyer called the charge “defaming,” and countered that the black strip on her arm was a “microphone wire, not a bra-strap.”
