Ferguson Mayor Says He Won’t Resign: Someone Needs to ‘Run the Ship’
Ferguson Mayor James Knowles held a press conference tonight on the resignation of Police Chief Thomas Jackson. Knowles said the chief made the decision himself and is receiving a one-year severance package.
Knowles spoke last week about taking action after the DOJ released its report on racially-motivated police practices and said today in order for the city to continue, “we cannot have everybody just up and leave.”
When a reporter asked Knowles if he’s planning to resign to, he said, “Somebody is going to have to be here to run the show, and, you know, I’ve been committed and the city council has been committed to making those reforms.”
He acknowledged that there are people who are calling for his head, but said that won’t solve the problem.
