Greta Van Susteren Holds Santorum’s Feet To The Fire Over Supporter’s Aspirin As Contraception Remark

Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren held Republican hopeful Rick Santorum‘s feet to the fire over supporter Foster Friesscontroversial remark about birth control. “Will you at least correct him about that?” Van Susteren pressed. “I think most women don’t think it’s a particular funny comment.”

“Foster is known in political circles as telling a lot of jokes and some of them are not particularly funny, this one was not,” Santorum acknowledged. “He is not creepy. he is a good man, a great philanthropist, a very successful businessman. Told a bad off-color joke and he shouldn’t have done it. That is his business. It doesn’t, in my opinion, reflect on the campaign or me because he wasn’t doing it as part of our campaign.”

“I should haven’t said he’s creepy,” Van Susteren clarified. “I should have said what he said was creepy. I don’t know the guy.”

“A good man!” Santorum interjected.

“Whatever,” countered Van Susteren. “I don’t know, the only thing I know is what he said. Right now, he is 0 and 1 with me.”

“It was a stupid joke,” Santorum added.

Self-Implosion!!!  You lost your chance Santa.  Should have criticized him, not passed up as a joke,  he would still have given you the money.

    >>“It was a stupid joke,” Santorum added.<<

Once again the right-wingers spend a whole day on this site defending comments that even one of their own candidates wont defend.
    Typical.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, it’s kind of funny how the crazy conservatives were defending this guy all day & now Santorum is throwing him under the bus. Looks like the Mediaite conservatives just exposed themselves as even bigger wackos than we originally thought.

  • Anonymous

Forget the pill, girls should hold Santorum between their knees and that will make sure no one gets pregnant.

  • DoNotMindMe

Most of us said that Freiss made a stupid joke that he shouldn’t have. Most libs were trying to make a bigger deal out of it then it was and we had to go into overdrive with our defense in order to block your insanity.

  • Anonymous

”we had to go into overdrive with our defense in order to block your insanity.”

    Really? How old are you?

  • Anonymous

    >>”we had to go into overdrive with our defense in order to block your insanity. “<<

Is there anything you guys do that you WON'T blame on the Left?

  • DoNotMindMe

My sometimes-bombastic comments are all for show … and it only took 4 mins for the libs to come take the bait.

    *DRINK*

Oh I get it, your 5 years old.

Santorum is just lucky that Romney’s campaign is backfiring with brown sludge all over it or Santorum would end up in trouble with these comments.  He needs a leash on his millionaire buddy.

Do you have them now?  Why do you lie?

  • Anonymous

You basically did what Friess did. You made a stupid comment thinking you were smart, it backfired against you & now everyone thinks you’re dumb, so now you’re backtracking acting as it was an attempt to troll. At least Freiss is a millionaire. You’re just a loser.

Santorum should have clarified that his official campaign stance was chastity belts for all single women.  This way it keeps the little women pure for the sacred wedding night.  Because we all know, especially us Catholics (fallen in my case) that sex is a vile and distrusting thing and should only be shared with the one you marry.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know.  I can’t really muster the ire to get outraged over this comment, I guess. To me it really was just a dumb joke, and on top of it Santorum didn’t even tell it himself.

I think the outrage over this is a little manufactured.

  • Anonymous

It’s not about outrage but it gives you a good idea of how ignorant Republicans really are. While we’re talking about something that’s a serious issue to women, the Republicans have been completely dismissive of their needs. Not only did the support the Catholic Church denying their employees birth control coverage, but they’re also making a big deal if insurance companies step in to provide them with the coverage. Then on top of all that, this clown comes in & cracks jokes about how women in his day did just fine putting aspirin between their knees, adding salt to the wound. What this indicates is that Republicans couldn’t care less about issues concerning women.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neil-Murphy/100000566621491 Neil Murphy

Yeah, who needs help like that, this doesnt seem to be Santorums best issue to begin with.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neil-Murphy/100000566621491 Neil Murphy

Who is being denied birth control coverage? Isnt it free?

  • bsorin1

Oh, such a good man who makes crude jokes at the expense of women. Why don”t these men ever make jokes about men keeping their zippers zipped, or keeping their knees together? Simple. Because they are men.

there was nothing creepy about his comments. it’s a common statement, from days passed. the dude is 71, for crying out loud.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

    no kidding.

  • Hout Bosques

If you have health care insurance that covers prescriptions, & you don’t work directly IN a church organization (as opposed to being employed by a non-church organization that’s owned by church, such a university or hospital or such), it’s might seem ‘free’, in the sense that there’s no ADDITIONAL cost after you’ve paid any employee contribution to the insurance plan.

If you have health care insurance that doesn’t cover prescriptions, it’s not free, & it’ll cost you between $1,200 to $1,500 per year – UNLESS you’re paid so little that you qualify for some separate subsidy, in which case you’re yearly out of pocket costs for standard birth control pills depend on what state you live in & the amount of the subsidy & co-pay that state provides (In theory, it could be as little as 10% of the costs, or as much as 60%, so between $120 & $700.).

If you have no health care insurance at all AND you’re unemployed & receiving Medicare, it’s covered; that’s obviously a rare situation. If you’re a vet or currently with the national reserve, or you’re currently married to a vet, you’re covered the same as if you were on Medicare; that’s not at all uncommon.

If you have have no health care insurance & you’re self employed, you’re SOOL unless you qualify for a state subsidy.

If you have no health care insurance & you’re unemployed & on social assistance, you may be covered; it depends.

If you have no health care insurance & you’re unemployed but not on social assistance, you may be lucky enough to live near enough to a Planned Parenthood office, & may be covered if they have the funds.

  • Hout Bosques

He’s MULTI-millionaire, at level quite a bit higher than Romney. But this performance makes one wonder how that could be possible.

He’s supposedly really good at stock-picking – or so goes the story. When first I came across his name around 2005, it was because he was a big investor in a war supply conglomerate known as The Armor Group, which made an early killing on flipping government grants, subsidies & cost-plus contracts with the armed forces among it’s subsidiaries, ensuring that some subs absorbed the costs of filling the contracts while others took the benefit. The major investors in the group were all big money backers of Bush in the 2000 & 2004 elections, mostly bundled through Jack Abramoff; but I’m sure all that was a complete coincidence & the fact that Freiss quintupled his net worth thru that group in a matter of less than two years before selling his shares at a huge price subject only to capital gains tax, & that somehow Freiss has been able to avail himself of the ‘carried forward earned income exemption’ ever since, was entirely due to what a sharp stock picker he is.

Also, he’s very tight with the Koch brothers, & a co-investor with them on a number of ventures into chemical additives; no doubt another coincidence.

Santorum should have come back at Greta by asking her to defend all the stupid, creepy comments that Shep Smith and other MSNBC anchors say.  The guy isn’t part of Santorum’s campaign, therefore, it has no bearing on whether Santorum should even be asked about it.  Grow up Greta!

  • Centrist79

What happens to the pill in the rain?

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Epic Fail. This guy, if ever he were sexually active, would have been so throughout the 60′s and 70′s.The Pill was out in 1961. “Sex and the Single Girl” was published in 1962. Griswold v. Connecticut was decided in 1965. Sex had at long last come to America. And, it was happening all over. By comparison, these days are rather tame. You’re being more than a bit myopic.

    he didn’t “freak” on either.

the “pill”?  You did not go to the Dr. as a single girl and ask for the pill – even in 67.

Grow up and think back.  These days tame?  Don’t know what the hell you were doing back then – but you were not the majority.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

I know! He thinks we are “tame” now, compared to the 60′s? LOL! Kids at 11 are having sex in classrooms and on playgrounds, sex is all over the tv, and adults and kids post videos of them having sex on youtube… These times are anything but tame or prude.

why aren’t you libs crying about what Maxine Waters said about republicans, if you are so concerned about “creepy”? the guy stated a fact. spin it however you want. this is the reason I quit watching Fox News because of liberal CNN castoff Greta, pompous jackass liberal/moderate OReilly and Sean has become a whiny little bitch. this guy didn’t make a joke…its a FACT. Deal with it.

How can Santorum say it wasn’t part of the campaign. Friess is his number 1 supporter, on air only because of his support for Santorum, as a surrogate for Santorum. Presumably, Santorum is beholden to this guy, whould he be elected to any officer, ever. This can’t be the first time he used that reference. Clearly, no one told him it was wrong.

Republican Candidate always cries foul on Gotcha Question when they go
on FoxNews and they are ask the same question that Liberals ask and they
don’t call out FoxNews anchor on a gotcha question … Republican are
full of shirt … Case in Point … FoxNews Anchor Greta Van Susteren as
Rick Santorum about Aspirin controversy ….. Now CBS Charlie Rose ask
Rick Sontorum the same question this morning and Rick brings out the
Gotcha card and that what the liberal press do ….. Why Rick Santorum
say the same thing to Greta Van Susteren went she ask him about the
Aspirin Controversy ……. When FoxNews ask you the Aspirin Question is
okay but when you go to another network its a Gotcha question … You
full of shirt …. check the link …Greta Van Susteren of FoxNews ask
Rick Santorum the same question …. Never once did Rick say Greta Van
Susteren there you go against bringing up the Gotcha Question because
Greta works for FoxNews and Charlie Rose work for CBS …….

No, mediaite ‘freaked out’ with a misleading, hyperbolic headline (it’s their ‘thing’).  He was just slightly annoyed at best.   Mediaite is known for its hyperbolic headlines, so best to watch the clip if you have any interest in the content.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

For once, you’re correct. No one was posting videos showing himself or herself having sex on You Tube in 1967. A brilliant observation, I say “Brillo!”. Boy, do I have egg on my face now.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

One wonders, then, why the Summer of 1968 was called the “Summer of Love”. Or, why in 1969 all of those people were simulating sex acts at Woodstock. Or, also in 1969, what those Stonewall patrons were protesting. Or, what was really happening at those orgies in 1970.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

I can’t say what primary school students do in Italy, but I can attest that one might walk through an elementary school hallway in Dallas or cross a middle school playground in Duluth and see fewer than a handful of students engaged in sex.

  • expatpatriot

Nonsense. My sisters (unmarried in the late 60s) went to their doctors and got prescriptions for birth control pills, with the knowledge and approval of our parents.

And we lived in a small town where everybody knew everything about everybody else.

And what my sisters did was what the town’s sensible teens were all doing.

Don’t know where you were in the 1960s, but “somewhere else” comes to mind.

Why don’t men try putting an aspirin between THEIR knees to prevent unwanted pregnancies?  Why is the foundational assumption for this argument always that men will be men (i.e., they’ll stick it wherever they can), and women alone must prevent birth–or now, as the Republicans will have it–contraception? Then we have a panel of men determining how the law should reinforce this view.  Disgusting!  By the way, where are all the Republicans who said in 1960 that we couldn’t elect a Catholic to office (Democrat John F. Kennedy) because he’d take his orders from the Pope?  Looks like that’s EXACTLY what we have in store for us if Santorum is elected!
