ABC’s Christiane Amanpour has grabbed the interview of the day, sitting down at the presidential palace in Cairo with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. In the half-hour exclusive, Mubarak said he’s “fed up” and ready to leave office, but said he can’t. “If I resign today there will be chaos.”

Mubarak repeated his intention to “die on Egyptian soil,” and expressed regrets about the violence that has raged since yesterday, telling Amanpour “I was very unhappy about yesterday. I do not want to see Egyptians fighting each other.”

As for the anger being directed at him from protesters insisting he step down, Mubarak said “I don’t care what people say about me. Right now I care about my country, I care about Egypt.”

The interview is set to air on tonight’s ABC World News, and was discussed in a Special Report with Diane Sawyer. Watch it here, from ABC News:

“Mubarak said he’s “fed up” and ready to leave office, but said he can’t. “If I resign today there will be chaos.””

Did Amanpour bother to point out to Mubarak that it is his government that has caused the “chaos” that is happening now?: You guys need to post Shep’s response to this.

I don’t understand why that guy wants to flat-out ruin his country and kill tons of people just cause he’s selfish and greedy and wont step down. Would he rather the country be ruined than continue?

  • Zakk

What exactly would the definition of chaos be? A good follow up question would have been, what do you call what is going on now?

Seriously! Egypt will be much better off under the freedom of the Muslim Brotherhood! What a selfish SOB that Mubarak dude is!

I support the people of Egypt not some asshole dictators and his gestapo, you’re really nuts if you think the guy hiring thugs to beat up peaceful protestors, should be the leader of that country.

Real Leaders don’t need a gestapo.

They should call in Sean Penn , Madonna or Ted Danson here. We need some true leaders.

Did Christiane bother to point out to Mubarak that his government is causing the chaos in the streets now?

NOTE just who tyrant dictator mubarak picked to give an “exclusive interview” — an Islamic muslin with NO REAL TIES TO AMERICA, just like himself !!!!!

“Amanpour was born in Iran to her father, Mohammad, an Iranian airline executive, and her British mother, Patricia. The Amanpours led a privileged life under the government of the Shah of Iran (NOTE: another despotic dictator supported by the US with BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars and endless efforts by the CIA to keep him in power). She completed her primary education in Iran, and at the age of 11 her parents sent her to boarding school in England. She attended and graduated from an all-girls school, New Hall School in Chelmsford, Essex, England. Christiane returned to England not long after the Islamic Revolution began. She stressed that they were not forced to leave but rather that when they were returning Iraq invaded Iran, and so they stayed, and after a while it just became difficult to return to Iran.”

Mubarak has a point. This type of regime change means a lot more chaos before it gets better if it ever does. Take a look at the history of Cuba. I am not saying he should not step down or if he should only that it is more complicated than people would like to believe. Its very easy to sit in your living room and say he should step down but the reality is something else. It is understandable for those protestors to want him to step down but they may be sorry if they get what they think they want. If people stop fighting and go home while working on that election in 8 months they will be working again in a week or less and the stores will reopen and so on. But if he steps down it will take longer to get everything going again as agreement must be reached as to who will govern. Shall they have the UN come in to govern during the interim. I would not want UN soldiers US soldiers or any other soldiers in my country. Complicated.

    .
    Is it ever!!!!!

We really don’t even know who all the major players are and how they interact and relate to each other.

I’m afraid that historically the Egyptians are facing very long well nigh impossible odds for an outcome that improves their lot. That goes for the region and the world, I might add.

Scary times, to say the least.

Exactly. Mubarak sure seems to be a real P.O.S. But take a look at the Muslim Brotherhood. Their demands to rescind the peace treaty with Israel is a capital hint of things to come………………..

Yes I had forgotten that little detail, not the Muslim Brotherhood but the effect on the people of a war with Israel. Scary is too tame a word.

Christiane’s interviews with Mubarak and Suleiman is a definite tribute to her news brand. I find it doubtful that either man felt they were speaking to ABC News, rather they were talking with Ms. Amanpour, arguably one of the most recognizable foreign correspondents in the world.
