John McCain Dodges Obama Nobel Bullet: “I’m sure the President understands that he now has even more to live up to”
Did President Barack Obama deserve his Nobel Peace Prize? That question was put bluntly to his former rival, John McCain, by John King on CNN’s “State of the Union” today.
“The President of the United States — who a year ago this weekend was your campaign rival heading into the final month of the campaign — is the Nobel Peace Laureate for 2009. Deserved?”
Pause. Then, diplomatically:
“I’m sure that the President is very honored to receive this award, and…the Nobel committee, I can’t divine all of their intentions, but I think part of their decision making was expectations, and I’m sure the President understands that he now has even more to live up to.” He went on, speaking the not-so-obvious given the past few days: “As Americans, we’re proud when our President receives an award of that prestigious category…I think all of us were surprised at the decision, but I think Americans are always pleased when the President is recognized by something on this order.”
Er…right, that’s definitely been the impression. Take it from
Bill Kristol and Liz Cheney on on FNC this morning: She called it a “farce” and he said “President Obama and I have done about the same amount to bring about world peace.” Which I guess is his way of saying that Obama didn’t deserve the award. Watch the Cheney/Kristol video here. McCain below:
