Jon Stewart’s Criticism Of President Obama Continues To Grow

video

President Obama addressed the BP oil disaster to the nation last night, and received some pretty harsh criticism from commentators who are usually supportive of the administration. Well now you can include Jon Stewart among the growing list of White House critics, though last night The Daily Show host went after Obama’s apparent position switch on habeus corpus, extradition and the due process of terror suspects; ultimately comparing Obama’s chasing of Presidential powers to that of Frodo chasing his “precious.” Ouch.

It’s fair to say that, since he entered the public stage, Barack Obama has made a pretty favorable impression on Jon Stewart. Throughout the 2008 election, Stewart and his legion of loyal viewers were largely seen as supporters of Obama’s political efforts (and agenda.) But something has changed – and in the past few weeks and months, Stewart has become a far more vocal critic of the president (recently chiding his many photo ops and mocking his “complicated responses‘.)

But last night’s critique was different than those that preceded them – not because of what was said about the President, but the decision process that likely lead to the following segment (a video clip of which is embedded below.) The Daily Show tapes its show roughly around 5:30 every night. So when a newsworthy event occurs after their scheduled taping — such as the Oval Office address to the nation last night — Stewart and producers have to come up with an opening segment that feels newsworthy.

Its largely a coincidence that Stewart joined the chorus of formerly supportive cable new personalities criticizing the President, and no one should ever confuse Stewart with the left-of-center opinion media personalities like Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews.

When a Democratic president has lost the support Olbermann, Maddow, Matthews and now Jon Stewart, that’s not good news (for the White House.) That’s not to say that the game is over – there will certainly be many more opportunites for Obama to win back the support of this group (and many others.) But last night was not a good one for the White House.

Actually, it’s very good news. People (myself included) are waking up…

oh woe is Obama – if he has lost Colby Hall – hes lost middle america…

    HA!

no worries for the Obots – despite criticism of the speech – matthews, olbermann, maddow and hall are still as biased for and fighting for obama as ever – they all just have to admit that the white house did a terrible job with the stagecraft and lack of substance of this speech. (seems they let another crisis go to waste)

new three day Rasmussen tracking poll has obama at 42%

    oh my…

for a prez to drop 1% is a major thing – people usually stick by their opinion about the POTUS – so this kind of drop is something to be noted -

but expect the press to continue to say obama is at ‘around” 50% -

theyre not gonna give up on obama till the last dog dies.

and on that point – it seems that the yesterday’s estimate of the spill is actually releasing 60,000 barrels a day might have to be doubled…so the WH first said 1,0000 barrels…then 5,0000….and independent analysis from CalTech now say 100,000….wow huh…ready from day one huh? – but obama said – again – last night that 90% of the spill oil will be sucked up….somehow…shortly……

now tell me, who believes that bs and where is the media questions about what the heck that statement means and where hes come up with that idea (probably the same place the admiral keeps getting his happy hopes that the well we be capped in a “few days” – how many times has he said this?)

id like to see Mediaite ask why these questions havent been asked by those in the DC media – instead of endless snarky stories about unimportant and useless things (and idiotic defenses of thuggish and probably drunken Congressmen)

Hopey, changey speeches have a shelf life and the people who voted this clown into office are just now finding that out. Our community organizer is in wayyyyyyyy over his head and the hopey, changey speeches are falling flat…. because sooner or later, there has to substance behind the pretty words. He has zero substance… he’s an empty suit.

This video was so funny. It was like a field of flowers on a warm sunny day, wrapped up in a big, fat I told you so!
It was so funny, even the last line cracked me up.

Obama has earned the criticism. His response to the Gulf Oil disaster has been disgraceful and incompetent beyond belief. Obama has morphed into George Costanza.

  • AngelPeters

Are people really surprised that Obama has lacked the experience needed to be POTUS? It’s the very reason I didn’t vote him. He simply wasn’t ready and his time in office has proven those of us with that argument during his campaign right in our assessment.

He sold voters a “feel good” package. But that doesn’t equal readiness for the job.

Honestly, I think anybody who thinks that the Clintons would not have done a better job are simply lying to themselves or dumber than dirt.

  • sarainitaly

I completely think Hillary would have done a better job.

  • Liberty Banned

Agreed. As much as I didn’t care for Bill Clinton, or his wife, he recognized that operating in the center, after the DNC defeat of ’94, worked better for the country. Plus, Bill had executive experience as the Governor of Arkansas. Although, I must add that Mrs. Clinton doesn’t have executive experience either.

Hillery would have had her moments. She would have done a lot better job, then Obama or McCain, Palin and any other backwoods huckleberry you can find. Any woman that can put up with Bill and the shite he put her through could handle this mess!

  • JamesA1102

I completely think Hillary would have done a better job.

Of course if Hillary had done everything exactly the same as the President, you’d be praising her to high heaven. Instead you’re just driven by your pathological hatred of the President.

  • m

Thank god nobody mentioned that McCain would’ve done a better job (because we all know the answer to that, lol).

After reading your disgusting verbal attack/ bigoted remarks regarding rural Americans, you are easily classified as just another partisan hack. Rural Americans are an equal and valuable part of Americana. They have a rich history, and are their sub-cultural are very diverse. I’m sorry Burnnotice but you are simply just a bigot, although I will concede that it is your right to be one.

    JamesA1102 is a obot in denial….

anyone with any integrity would admit that the clintons woulda played this very differently.

but we learned in 2008 and since that obots have no integrity whatsoever…

so let just ignore this clinton hater ok?

    Re: Hillary Clinton references..

it’s really not too hard for *anybody* to do a better job than Obama right about now…

Obama’s speech last night did not appeal to me that he understands the gravity of the situation. We are now 50+ days into this thing, we can still see the oil gushing out of the well; we can already see the oil on our shorelines…

Even Bush knew after the Brown fiasco that he needed to take charge…and take charge he did…albeit 2 weeks late.

The oil spill is 50+ days now…does Obama even understand what this could lead to?

If this was a fire burning out of control, the last thing I would be thinking about is the insurance claims.
If this was a sinking ship, the last thing I would be thinking about is who’s to blame, and who will pay for the losses…

Rather than bashing the oil industry and using this as an opportunity to punish the oil industry with cap and tax, Obama should probably try to reign in the oil industry NOW to work together to bring this spill under control This is call “LEADERSHIP”. Together Everyone Achieves More? ever heard of this concept?

There will be time for fault finding later…right now, WE NEED TO BRING THIS DISASTER UNDER CONTROL!

I’ve been saying it for a while: Obama, The Black Reagan

    Chains u can believe in…

“I’ll show you politics in America. Here it is, right here. ‘I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs.’ ‘I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking.’ ‘Hey, wait a minute, there’s one guy holding out both puppets!’”

I’m not in denial about anything. But I don’t start from a place this person is bad or this person is good and then just look for the facts that fit that pre-conceived bias.

No I deal in facts. You should try it sometime.

What’s the deal, Colby? No sensational, blatantly untrue & biased headline today? You remembered to take your pills this morning, huh?

  • writer

James, isn’t it a fact that other left wingers are criticizing Obama? Why aren’t you firing some comments their way if you disagree with their position?

  • JamesA1102

Why aren’t you firing some comments their way if you disagree with their position?

Because I decide to whom I respond to, not you.

Ooh, testy. In other words, hypocrite, you still won’t criticize anyone on the left.

Do we see some inconsistencies? Do we see more rats every day abandoning the sinking ship that is the -0bama regime?
