Maine Gov. Paul LePage To NAACP: “Tell ‘Em To Kiss My Butt”

video

It looks like the governor of Maine, Paul LePage won’t be attending the upcoming ceremonies marking the Dr. Martin Luther King holiday. The governor’s declined invitations from the NAACP, which LePage dismisses as “a special interest…and I’m not going to be held hostage by special interests.”

The governor’s director of communications, Dan Demeritt, told Maine television station WCSH-TV LePage has personal commitments on Sunday and will be attending the funeral of a state trooper on Monday.

But the governor was a bit more blunt–and klassy–when he spoke to reporters at a meeting of business leaders in Sanford, insisting that despite criticism, he’s not biased, and after all, his adopted son is black:

“Tell ‘em to kiss my butt. If they want to play the race card, come to dinner and my son will talk to them.”

Watch the story here, from WCSH:

    Points for style.

FYI: Gov. LePage has an adopted BLACK child.

SO, of course, the National Association for the Advancement of (D-Crat Socialist) Colored People will now call him a RACIST for not obeying their every command.

  • Probably NOT wrong

Now that is my kind of Governor. They are going to have a very hard
time calling him Racist, aren’t they.
Going to be ineresting to see how they attack.
    Good for the Gov———————

  • SWWT

He could’ve just said that he couldn’t make it.

  • Big Eddie

This is a Republican governor , which was left out in this and the original story . Good to see some leaders , including Jerry Brown and Cuomo standing up and taking charge . Forget the interest groups , lobbyists and unions . They are state destroyers . We need 50 Christies .

You have to click on the WCSH-TV link to get the proper context of what led to his remarks – as you suggest , he did ‘just’ respond that he couldn’t make it. Then the NAACP publicly criticized him for declining and these further remarks are in response to that. In other words, he is responding to their attack.

So telling the NAACP, an irrelevant, bullying, politically bent organization to piss off warrants a K [kk] in classy, regardless of the fact he adopted a black kid.

  • da-wdc

It’s a national holiday and he is the governor of the state. Seems to me that as the governor he ought to take part in a ceremony to mark the day.

There’s no need for him to say something that disrespectful. I’m not saying he’s a racist, I’m saying he’s a jerk, and as the governor, it’s not his job to be a jerk on MLK Day.

  • CosmosDan

He seems pretty jovial in the clip but according to them stories at the stations site part of the issue is he’s declined a lot of invitations from them to meet. They also say his claim that the event at the state prison was for black prisoners only isn’t true, and an official in the corrections department said he doubted that kind of event would even be allowed.

It’s curious. I can see how some people might see this as race thing but in light of his adopted son I doubt that.

Maybe it’s his view of them as special interests.

He lacks tact, immensely. But I question why he chose to strike out at them like this. Special interest or not, it wasn’t like this was some kind of a challenge. They invited him, that’s all. He could have simply declined the invitation. It was wrong and rude of him to do so in this fashion.

He declined several invitations to attend functions which caused someone ion the Maine chapter of the NAACP to make a statement about him being a racist. He was just sworn in on the 5th and has a lot of people and groups asking for his time. He has a black adopted son. I can understand him being annoyed with that kind of BS.

It isn’t tactful but listening to his rather jovial manner of saying it , while inviting them to dinner to meet his son, I can appreciate his frankness. Someone in their group jumped to a nasty conclusion and opened their mouth , he responded. That’s all.

in addition, word has it that the NAACP requested he speak to the black prison population. He stated he would speak to all of the prisoners and the NAACP refused to include the white or non-black prisoners. Additionally, the purpose of NAACP’s involvement is thought to be related to “Turn out the Vote” type activities for the black population

The NAACP has been an arm of the Democrat Party for many years. Almost everything they say is irrelevant.
They don’t represent blacks in this country unless they are LIBERALS.
Nobody should give a dime to them.

LePage is a rude, crude neanderthal who strives to be a leader. Maine is 98% white, so he takes no risk by getting his headlines directing an insult to the NAACP. The only one who looks bad, is LePage. Don’t the tbaggers and their selected representatives make you proud to be American?? NOT!!!!!!!!

I’m a little confused by that. The NAACP said the “only black prisoners” wasn’t true and the Maine prison system wouldn’t even allow it. Some one from the corrections department said that was probably the case.

I’d be surprised at a get out the vote activity aimed at the black population in Maine but it is the NAACP.
For me the thing is the , the guy was just barely sworn in. Maybe they’re talking pre election functions as well that he turned down. As an elected official I think it’s legit for citizens to expect some of his time, but learn some facts and give it some time before you put your foot in his mouth.

My understanding, which someone else pointed out as well, was that he did what you said and then got a hail of criticism from the NAACP for simply not coming. Dunno if this is true, but that is my understanding.

Just in case we wonder if there’s prejudice above the Mason-Dixon Line, look at Maine, f’god’s sake. You can’t get further north, and this guy is an out-and-out bigot. If I lived in Maine, I’d be thinking how to impeach the sucker and get rid of him.

  • msblkwidow

This governor is governor for all the people of Maine. I think he should be handled throught the voting box. It’s just that simple. And as far as him having an adopted Black baby doesn’t mean he has made a smart decision. It only means (to me) that there’s one more Black child who will learn absolutely nothing about his history. How sad. And he thinks he’s doing something great. That very child will turn on him because eventually, the child will want to know his own history. Then, it’ll be too bad for the smart mouthed governor.

Lastly, I’m glad he is refusing to attend the celebration. We don’t need people like him there anyway.

  • msblkwidow

It really urks me when White people think they know soooo much about African Americans. And I know they’d like to but for some of you here, talk what you KNOW! To the gentleman who said that the NAACP doesn’t represent Black people, you are absolutely wrong. Don’t worry about who gives money to them. You just make sure you keep your money. We don’t want it.

And as I said previously, this governor adopted a Black child…oh woe be unto that poor child. Because…this very child is going to grow up wanting to know all about his history. He will recognize the fact that he is Black. He will be misused by racist Whites. This governor and his family had better be ready for the roller coaster ride they will take after this child grows up to adulthood. And, this governor will have to take ALL the blame.

His “adopted” son already an adult.

I wouldn’t pretend to know all about any people but my experience tells me not all people are alike, think the same or feel the same, no matter their race. Here you are eager to criticize him knowing almost nothing about it.

As it turns out his “adopted” son has only been living with them and going to school in the states since he was 17, and probably not officially adopted. Even so, He was only sworn in on the 5th, so rushing to declare him a bigot is a bad call by someone in the Maine chapter of the NAACP.

Just when I think I’ve gotten out, they pull me back in…

First, I want to say that everything I would have said in response to the story has been adequately and aptly covered by both BFD and CosmosDan already, among many others in the comments. As for mspoisonousblk…

I’m pretty sure that the governor’s son is learning all he needs to know about his history right now, and he couldn’t ask for a better teacher than the NAACP and other racist Blacks like you. It’s invaluable that he learn all about the oppression of Blacks in America for hundreds of years. It’s even more invaluable that he learn how instrumental Dr. King was in bringing about the end of that institutionalized oppression. And it’s most invaluable that he is able to clearly see for himself how the fight for equality was neatly subverted by choosing affirmative action as the vehicle to gain that equality. I can just see the NAACP spokesman giving an interview with awesome quotes like:

“We’ve abandoned egalitarian principles to save the system of equality.”

    or:

“We have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal., but some of us need a little more help than others”

We have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood and hash out reparations.

We have a dream that one day even the state of Maine, a state sweltering with the heat of justice, sweltering with the heat of inclusion, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice for Blacks.

We have a dream that my four little children my mother raised for me will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the content of their character but by the color of their skin.

    We have a dream today!

We have a dream that one day, down in Maine, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of “I adopted a Black child as my son” and “I refuse to speak at segregated events” — one day right there in Maine little black boys and black girls will get preferential treatment over little white boys and white girls.”

That’s the legacy painstakingly built by the NAACP and wholeheartedly embraced by ignorant people like you who don’t stop to think before spouting off the hatred you’ve been shamelessly taught.
