Neil Cavuto Compares Situation In Haiti To Somalia

The horrible situation in Haiti continues to reveal a series of questionable comments in the cable news world. Next up? Fox News Neil Cavuto, who introduced his guest, retired Lt. Col. Bill Cowen thusly: “I know its apples and oranges, completely different situation — I always think that when we get knee-deep in middle of something that could be pretty violent, I think of Somalia — very diifferent circumstances — but we know what we can happen.”

I call BS on your assessment Colby.

I watched the segment live and to me was clearly made of the distinctions between Haiti and Somolia. Such as really no mass weapons in the hands of Haitians. A segment on what to learn from Somalia to avoid getting to a Somalia.

You really think Cavuto’s segment did more to draw comparisons to Somolia than it did to draw clear distinctions?

Logistics on how to keep peacekeepers, Haitians and relief workers safe while efficiently getting out aid. Lt. even claims how well the UN and peacekeepers up to EQ has done a much better job in Haiti that Somolia.

I think you just pulled a “Rush Limbaugh” for the purposes of drawing attention and provocation. Or at least inching close to that proverbial ethical line.

Just another manufactured story to evoke manufactured outrage because it’s FOX. This site is sooooo predictable.

you call BS on my assessment that this is a questionable comment? I stand by that assessment, It is questionable, isn’t it? See what I did there? I questioned it!

That’s what you want to hang your hat on? OK with me, but you’re stretching interpretation for the purposes of what I have to assess as selfish reasons (to draw attention).

You made an assertion with you HL. The ‘entire’ Cavuto segment was prefaced with the report of 4,000 Haitian prisoners that escaped and with reports of looting and machetes.

You provided the video. You didn’t answer the question, were there more distinctions of Haiti compared to Somolia or did they do more comparisons of Haiti to Somolia in the video you provided?

    Apples/oranges, different circumstances etc.

Of the 3minute 5 second video you provided, 3 minutes spent on Haiti and 5 seconds referring to Somolia. Somolia was never mentioned or referred to again after the 45th second.

Somolia was mentioned twice. Once to refer to how US can learn from that peacekeeping experience to do a better job in Haiti and the second time to state that Haiti is NO somolia in circumstances. Meaning no comparison!

So Yes, I call BS on your assessment and HL assertion. My assessment is you’re being an opportunist for selfish reasons.

    Razor..nice job!

    Colby,

Since you invoked technicalities with your “I questioned it” comment. Let’s go that way. The sentence you referred to as being ‘questionable” in this article.

“could be pretty violent, I think of Somalia — very diifferent circumstances — but we know what [[we]] can happen.”

Technically, “could” and “can” in that sentence means Cavuto was not yet making a comparison. Meaning it has not yet happened in Haiti.

With your HL of “Cavuto compares situation in Haiti to Somolia” to me is technically (and with sincerity)inaccurate. But I’m not hanging my hat on that. The entire segment stands on it’s own as concluding that Haiti is no Somolia in circumstances, thus no comparison. Segment mostly on what the US troops need to do to get relief and aid to Haitians quickly and with little disruption.

Here they go again. So far, the left wing media has used the Haitian disaster as a reason to attack Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, George Bush, Christians, the global warming skeptics, Wall Street…and now Neil Cavuto. Come on, you need to come up with an angle on Ronald Reagan and Herbert Hoover too. It’s sad that we’ve sunk to this level, but welcome to the world of political spin, where any and every event — even the deaths of tens of thousands of people in a natural disaster — is only just one more opportunity to settle scores.

There really seems to be a pattern on this site regarding Haiti and a lecturing tone on how it should be covered. If a source deviates in any way from an approved style they will come under criticism. I’m at a loss how Covuto erred on this, he was usung Somalia as an example for context regarding relief aid and some of their dangers, using an intellectual assessment and not injecting politics. What is the issue here?

With respect to Cavuto’s remarks, I believe he was simply reminding us that ANY society is only three days away from anarchy. For instance, you cut the food and water supply off of New York City, and three days later (probably sooner) you will see rioting and looting with many people being murdered over a scrap of food. Make no mistake about it; the situation in Haiti is sad–the people are poor, tired, injured, sick, and HUNGRY. Hunger brings out the savage in everyone. I know; I’ve been there.

Cavuto is a tool, but an idiotic one. I don’t know why anyone would care waht he said.

“The interwebs have more distortions about Fox’s Haiti coverage than Planter’s has peanuts. We’ve seen lies like FNC has [no reporters in Haiti]* and FNC is “[ignoring it all together]**” [sic]. Mediaite headlines what they describe as a “questionable comment”: Cavuto compared Haiti to Somalia. Yet the video shows only two references to Somalia, and comes to the conclusion that the circumstances are different. That’s not comparing–it’s contrasting.”
