Stephen Colbert Declares War On ‘Midwestern Media Elite’ After Local Iowa Station Declines To Run Ad

video

Any Stephen Colbert clip that includes the line, “the fat cats in Des Moines think they can sit in their ivory corn silos and play puppet master with our national politics” is deserving of our undying support and enthusiasm. And so it is with Colbert’s (what’s a new way to say “epic rant”?) funny bit about a Des Moines TV station that declined to run the campaign spots produced by Colbert’s political action committee.

The clip–which includes local Emmy taunting, shoutouts to competing Des Moines TV stations, and a refreshing dose of Nebraska-bashing–tears into WOI-TV’s reasons for refusing the ads: because they might confuse Iowa voters:

“Confusing to Iowa voters? Really? We’re not talking about the dip—-s over in Nebraska. This is Iowa. And unlike WOI, I believe Iowa voters can understand even a complex message like go to the Ames straw poll, write in Parry, spell it with an A. Or did I lose you WOI? Should I have the boys from WHO NewsChannel 13 explain it to you?

    I’ve asked it elsewhere, but I’m going to also ask it, here;

Clearly Colbert’s SuperPAC is worthy of a Peabody, but because the PAC is legally not part of the show would the award go to the Colbert Report or Stephen, himself? Not to mention that because the award is for electronic media would it even be eligible?

Yawn what a stale act Colbert has become.

I hope to see Colbert’s SuperPAC Ad here in Iowa.

There is nothing worthy about Colbert’s show.

  • Anonymous

Colbert is beyond stupid.  A bigger try hard would be difficult to find (except maybe Sharpton).

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Frankenstein

Dont tell this to liberals. They get the biggest kick out of thinking about all the people he “fools” .

Ironically, in that regard, the only people he’s really fooling are liberals themselves.

  • Jon Bershad

I’m not sure how it works. Do they have to specify which part of the show they’re giving him the Peabody for? If not, can’t they just give it to him for the time frame in which this all aired, thus including all the SuperPAC stuff which obviously has been the work of a great many people on that staff?

I’m sure I could look this stuff up but it’s Friday and the Del Close Marathon’s about to start here in New York! Serious thought, over!

  • BatboysDad

Colbert, take your Ad, your money and go back to NY!

Iowa is a tough place to be for a NY boy!

  • RODENTS

You stink Colbert! Your comedy show is the worst! I don’t like your glasses, either! There is nothing worthy about your show! Go back to your home of New York City! You are the biggest try hard (?) I know! The only person you are fooling is liberals! I’m mad at you!

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Frankenstein

‘Rodents’ wants to give Colbert’s ‘biggest try hard’ award a run for its money.

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

As I read the rules, they can give it for an individual episode, continuing series or the overall show. The latter seems to be the case for his previous win because in its description they mention his run for President, “Better know a District” and other parts of the program.

My question was actually somewhat facetious.

Because the Peabody is given by a private organization, they of course can do anything they’d like to do. The legal definitions separating the PAC from the actual program, plus the limitations placed on what can be produced by Viacom and how it can be used could limit their options in theory, but it’s doubtful the FEC would use an award as evidence, so the show really shouldn’t fear getting an award.

  • RODENTS

    AW YA GOT ME!

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Frankenstein

In full disclosure: Jon Bershad used to work for the Colbert Report.

Oh wait, I guess it isnt full disclosure if Jon doesnt disclose that himself is it?

    I thought it was amusing

This message is intended for the conservatives in this thread. Read this carefully, and dont make the mistake of dismissing Colbert because he tells jokes. I’ll explain below:

First let me start by saying that I like Stephen Colbert & Stewart. I watch them every night. They can be genuinely funny and their shows are well produced and razor sharp.

I also really like the point Colbert’s SuperPAC SHOULD BE trying to make.

What I dont like is the one-sided left wing direction the show has taken over the years, and I have every reason to believe that the upcoming superPAC ads will be a tool to be used as de facto ads for the democratic national committee.

The Colbert SuperPAC unfortunately WONT just be about pointing out the absurdities of the political donation and PAC system (on both sides!) we have.

It will be about expanding Colbert’s formulaic ridicule of the right from his 30 minute show on Comedy Central, where it belongs, to the voting booth and trying to affect outcomes.

Based on the direction his show has taken, this is no doubt an orchestrated ploy. The rally to restore sanity, the PAC, these are all specifically intended to counteract what the left percieves as the advantage the right has, which is the “Fox news” community and how well conservatives can organize through one network.

Ironically, its the left’s monopoly on the media narrative the that created a void that Fox filled. There is no mystery to Fox’s ratings either: When there is only one network that caters to conservatives, they concentrate. Liberal viewership is split all over the place as they control everything else (the only difference being the once-failing MSNBC branding itself so far to the left that it can stand out)

So the argument can be made that liberals CREATED Fox. LOL hows that for a mind-f**k?

That aside- the intent is and always will be to discredit and destroy Fox because of their influence. When that really never took hold as well as they would have liked, the next best thing for them was to try to match Fox blow for blow.

And what Stewart and Colbert have already figured out (and what Fox is just now coming around to seeing with bit players Greg Gutfeld and Dennis Miller) is that humor wins hearts and minds. Humor therefore has become the left’s most potent weapon against the right, with Stewart and Colbert taking the lead, and Maddow and MSNBC taking notes and doing their best imitations of Daily Show broadcasts.

But if Colbert’s PAC works and actually influences outcomes (as it intends to do), this is a big win for the left. This is more than just about drawing ‘prank’ voters into the process, ala Rush Limbaugh’s operation chaos. This is about getting the non political to vote their way. Will it work? That remains to be seen, but dont make the mistake of dismissing the significance of this.

The Rick “Parry” thing? Thats just a trial balloon. Just wait. The campaign has barely begun.

The best way to counteract this is to expose it. People may laugh and think Colbert is funny, but no one laughs when they realize they are being cynically manipulated.

Colbert is more worthy than all of the Republican candidates combined.

  • Anonymous

There’s nothing to expose.  It’s already there!  The pod people, I mean Democrats are already taking over your mind! Woo~~~woo~~woo~~!!

  • Anonymous

It’s always new and bright and funny.

He’s not trying to fool anyone.  Where do you get this stuff?  He’s a comedian.  He’s got a show.  He’s not plotting the takeover of the world.

    Nice.

Sit down & shut up you left wing lap dog you.

  • CrazyLikeAFoxViewer

You only hate him because he holds a mirror up to fright wing insanity and narcissism. And like vampires, you can’t bear to look at yourselves.

  • http://www.constitutionallibertarian.co.cc/ DavidKramer

Another leftist whines that they are told that in the free market, anyone can turn down a certain narrative.

Should we look into how many times the Comedy channel turned down ads? OOOOOPPPPS! Do not bring that up Dave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Frankenstein

Yup, this is the typical braindead reaction I was expecting from leftists.

  • http://twitter.com/TommyBennett Tom Bennett

Shut up the humorless right wing dewsch bahgs.

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Frankenstein

You mean, he doesn’t pretend to be a conservative?

Have you even seen his show?

You are as thick as a 5 dollar milkshake.

  • ono

if only barney realized that he was no different than a leftist in his partisan hackery

  • ono

ironically. barney’s partisanship is part of the reason why america is where it is.

  • ono

Right wing Extremists are hypocrites who fail to realize that they are part of the problem in America. no less than the left wing liberals they hate.

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Frankenstein

Damn right! America is the best country in the world for a reason. LOL.

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Frankenstein

But left wingers? They are just well intentioned and know whats best for everyone, so its ok if they are partisan.

And if they lie, cheat and steal its ok because its for the greater good.

Did I get that right Ono?

Next time, when pontificating on partisanship, dont leave out one side, because that makes you the very partisan you’re ridiculing, which then makes you a hypocrite too.

    #ONOGOTPWNOED

  • Hugo Daun

Yeah…you’ve got the whole conspiracy figured out. Colbert and his henchmen will have to move on to their next nefarious plan to undermine the USA.

    Sorry…I looked at your super-secret “conservatives”-only comment.

  • clever

Worthy of a laugh at 20 percent of his childish humor but then again libtards still laugh at poopy diaper jokes.

  • clever

Ironically libtards are the most partisan hacks that are nothing more than a Zombie talking point.Obama good George bad republican hate old people Bill clinton good rapist

  • clever

Wow that was pretty stupid, even for a libtard.

  • clever

Another inteligent Libtard at his best with such a witty comeback fitting of a 2 year old.

  • Anonymous

To fool is to deceive.  He is not deceiving and does not try to deceive.  Anyone who can’t pick up the sarcasm after about 2 minutes of watching his show is still in diapers.  He started on the Daily Show, hello?

And do me a favor, if you want to state some facts to refute my claims, that’s fine, but I would appreciate it if you wouldn’t talk down to me……..idiot.

  • Anonymous

I read the entire diatribe.  Why do conservatives find it so necessary to just hurl insults to defend themselves?

  • Anonymous

“You don’t have to be smart to laugh at a fart joke, but you do have to be stupid not to.” Louis C.K.

Conservatives think that just hurling insults are funny.  They are not unless you’re Don Rickles.  And you’re not.  I knew Don Rickles, you’re no Don Rickles.  They also use bad kindergarten humor “libtards”, “MSDNC” ObamAtURD” or whatever else is the hot “word play” these days.  That stuff is not funny.  At all.  It’s like something a 3 year old would come up with.

  • ono

Barney doesn’t mention that a right wing extremist killed a bunch of people in norway

Is barney the same type of right wing extremist that killed a bunch of people in norway?  I don’t know.  I think it is a legitimate question

Barney is too stupid to mention that i put down left wingers in the same post.

That’s how smart he is. He isn’t. at all.

  • Sharpo

Apparently Barney can’t read because I’m taking apart both sides

Of course, Barney is a moron with no pee pee.

  • ceeza

the mean streets of iowa city…  LOL!!!

‘DECLARED WAR”? Woooooo…I guess the leftists have forgotten that they don’t like violent and threatening language.
