Stephen Colbert ‘Defends’ Embattled Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas

video

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has recently come under political attack for not reporting his wife’s income and “dropping by” a secret corporate fundraiser. Last night Stephen Colbert “defended” the embattled Thomas, not just from alleged tax evasion, but also from charges that he was inappropriately paid for attending a conservative political retreat. “It wasn’t a bribe,” Colbert chided, “it was a reward!” He then proceeded to call the taciturn Thomas up on the phone. It was funny.

Hey! A liberal comedian attacks a conservative and Mediate reposts it with no additional commentary.

In related news, the sun came up.

  • http://www.zazzle.com/talkingpoints NORBIT Jr.

Let’s see Colbert, or any other progressive Democrat, defend the difference in the way black Conservatives are treated as opposed to black liberals.

Liberal Democrats constantly spew the mantra of supporting minorities, but we all know the truth.

    Black Liberals are CELEBRATED.
    Black Conservatives are SMEARED.

Is this the character of a Party you want to Vote for?

  • TfT

“Embattled” becasue he is a black conservative. Oh so typical.

In other news: Fox and Friends openly laughed at mainstream media this morning for IGNORING, SPIKING and HIDING the cross hair and Nazi signs at the Wisconsin rallies.

Tha’s right folks – the state run media has no problem with lefties targeting and threatening righties and claiming they are akin to Nazi’s, but if the right does it they are a bunch of ignorant bigots.

oh the double standard is just too damn funny, and really quite embarrassing.

I’m surprised mediaite hasn’t done a story on the signs, given the attention this board gave the signs at the tea party rallies.

    Double standard much dan? Honestely.

You get mad when people contend that hatred of Obama is about race rather than his policies. Isn’t the same true here? Can’t people dislike Thomas for his views? Are all his critics racists?

What if one of the liberal justices had attended a MoveOn.org convention and received payment for it? Are conservatives here honestly going to claim they wouldn’t be livid about that?

  • Liberal Tormentor (formerly Seeing 2012 From My Window)

Paul, It was sarcasm. The whole reason of my post was because according to alot of libs, if you don’t like Obama’s policies, then you must be racist. Just playing their game.

  • TfT

Reading about how the mainstream media is celebrating the protesters in Wisconsin is making me laugh out loud; here we have cross hairs, nazi signs, etc., and the maintream media is endorsing, embracing, etc.

    Too damn funny.

the libs hate Thomas because he is a black conservative, just look at all the horrific things that have been said about him by other blacks, the same way the outrageous attacks were condiucted on Herman Cain, also ignored by this board (except under the Hannity story). This board did not to a stand along story about the racist attacks against Cain, just like they won’t do a story about the outlandish signs in Wisconsin.

Makes Dan and his board look pretty foolish, imho. But hey, at least I don’t get banned when I make my obserations and request they provide just a little balance here.

Come on Dan, how about a serious article about the hate speech going on by the protesters in Wisconsin?

Indeed. I was watching Matthews yesterday and he ran a clip that showed a sweep of the crowd and there was one lone sign visible above all the heads: “Heil Walker!” Strangely, though, Matthews felt no need to point it out or condemn it.

  • Liberal Tormentor (formerly Seeing 2012 From My Window)

Paul, plenty of high profile DEMS have attended things like the nutroot convention. Talk to me when Thomas is hearing a case involving said group.

High profile Dems? What? I am talking about members of the Supreme Court. Give me an honest answer. Would conservatives be upset if they discovered that a liberal justice was paid to attend a MoveOn.org convention? It’s a simple question.

  • skyfet

This kind of blatant corruption is what destroys a society. How can he have any credibility after this? It’s a shame, a shame, big one.

  • TfT

It is not just the cablers Sean, its Dianne, Katie and Brian too. Don’t they realize how stupid and foolish they look? The citizenry has access to the truth and facts, and these liberal loony elite “news anchors” spike the truth and claim soliditary. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I am still laughing that mediaite is ignoring it too. Makes them look really really silly, especially since they made such a big deal out of the signs at the tea party rallies and now spiking and ignoring worse signs at this rally makes them look like …. well….like they just donj’t care about the truth.

how sad for a media board to ignore the truth – I guess they want to continue playing on the same elite field at Katie Couric….bwahahahaha.

  • Liberal Tormentor (formerly Seeing 2012 From My Window)

Paul, unless Thomas is doing something that directly interferes with him impartially hearing a case, I fail to see a problem. LIberals HATE Thomas and will grasp at whatever straw they can. Liberals hating Clarence Thomas isn’t exactly breaking news.

That’s sweet. Fortunately, the ethical standard is not your pitifully low one. The standard is the appearance of impropriety. Let me emphasize the: the appearance. To all except the most strident ideological zealot, Justice Thomas appears to be an ethical nightmare.

Where I come from a “smear” means lying about someone to sully their reputation. Clarence Thomas DID neglect to report his wife’s income and he DID attend a Republican fundraiser. I don’t think either of those actions should be celebrated. In fact, combined with his failure to recuse himself from cases where there was a direct conflict of interest with his wife’s activities. I think they’re grounds for his impeachment.

I’d hate for anyone to assume that all African judges are the ethical nightmares Justice Thomas and his wife are clearly exceptions. But, this isn’t any surprise. From the moment his confirmation hearings began, it was clear that he brought excessive baggage on-board.

What I do find interesting is that Justice Thomas was a recipient of unparalleled affirmative action largesse, yet he vigorously opposes it for anyone else. And in his opposition, he still feels that he and he alone is entitle to special treatment in all things.

I don’t think anyone thinks that is a secret, but he was in fact required to report her income and has amended 13 years of disclosure reports.

“Like all federal judges, Thomas must file annual disclosure reports on his personal finances, but he had omitted details of his wife’s earnings in what he wrote was a “misunderstanding of the filing instructions.” He also had checked a box marking no spousal income.”

Thomas lied. Period. He USED to report his wife’s income, then stopped. That makes his “misunderstanding” defense a lie. He didn’t report ANY income for his wife, when everyone in DC knew she was working for Heritage. That makes him a fool. He has crossed the line of judicial ethics. He has become a politician. If that is what he wants to do, he should follow the example of Abe Fortas and Arthur Goldberg and resign from the Supreme Court.

  • ganymede

Thomas is the perfect example of why this country will slowly but surely continue to move to the left. He is probably one of the worst Justices ever. His appointment was an enormous insult not just to Black Americans but to anyone seriously interested in seeing American have an honest, effective Supreme Court. I suspect his days are numbered. It would be great if some progressive African Amreicans began a movement to have him removed from the bench and replaced with anyone of hundreds of Black jurists who are infinitely better qualified than this creep.
