We Ain’t Scared: MSNBC Airs Ads For Keith Olbermann’s New Current TV Show

There’s been a lot of Olbermann on MSNBC lately.

See, as we gear up (Got the popcorn ready? Who was in charge of bringing the jujubes?) for tonight’s premiere of Keith Olbermann‘s brand spanking new Current TV show – which, like his former show, is called Countdown and which, also like his former show, will air at 8 p.m. – we couldn’t help but notice the plethora of ads for it that have been running on MSNBC. Of course, it’s not unusual for a network to run ads on a rival channel, but it certainly is striking to see Olbermann’s new show promoted heavily on the network with which he parted ways so quickly and, evidently, acrimoniously.

The New York Times previously noted that Olbermann is attempting, through his new show, to “rather audaciously” draw viewers away from his former stomping ground. In fact, Olbermann is set to make lightning strike twice, as it were, by adding “more hours of like-minded hosts,” possibly introducing the world of evening political punditry to the next Rachel Maddow or Lawrence O’Donnell. Indeed, Olbermann has said he wouldn’t mind having Maddow herself join Current TV.

Of course, there’s no doubt that MSNBC benefits monetarily from running the ads, and, hey. Maybe they don’t see the competition as… competition. Then again, these could simply be local cable spots that MSNBC has no control over.

Cable News Advertisiong 101: Cable operators screw up ad placement all the time and the networks have no oversight at the operator level. They only have a grip on their own national ads. I have yet to see a single TV ad for Olbermann’s Current show on DirecTV. Your cable operator is doing this, not MSNBC.

CBS hires Nora O. as their WH correspondent!

Are they vying with CNN & NBC to become the official White House Station?

It’s already starting. Alex needed to give us a Daily Double of Keith. Slow Monday night.

I doubt MSNBC will be running any more ads for Countdown after Olbermann and Moulitsas exposed Joe Scarborough as a blubbering vagina. As the kids say nowadays:

    PWNED!

Olbermann’s new show was nothing different than what he did on MSNBC… just with worse production. But it was the same old agreeing guests, same style of delivery, same Worst Persons in the World, I’m sure it was the same Special Comment (I didn’t see it), and so on.

And if it wasn’t bad enough that he had ads running all over MSNBC, and attacking the network leading up to his new show (even doing it on an NBC program), he brought on Markos Moulitsas to say how terrible Joe Scarborough was for getting mad at Markos for baselessly suggesting that Scarborough is a murderer, and refused to apologize.

Even as a liberal, I thought that was a very inappropriate and underhanded comment. I didn’t see that entire segment, either (only catching the end), but it was obvious what they were saying and what the context was.

There have been ads for it running during Last Word for weeks. They’re DirecTV-specific, directing viewers to the correct channel number for Current.

Did Current TV have a problem selling all their ad space for tonight’s show:

“Second break: Ads from Microsoft bookend a lengthy promo for a Current football show. Somebody couldn’t straight sell all their ad time?”

What is going to happen? They steal one or two of the ten watching?
