Best of The Shining: Clips, Parodies and Recut Trailers

I read The Shining before I ever saw the movie, when I was maybe 12. It's an incredible book, one which taught me to fear hotel room bathtubs, what a topiary was, why you can't forget about the boiler, and the phrase "officious little prick" (I've met plenty of them since then.) I hate horror movies in general but I make a huge exception for this one, because I loved Stephen King books so much growing up and because this one was so damn good. Directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson in what might be his most iconic role, it's a classic movie filled with classic clips. Jack Torrance My Bloody Elevator This is just the trailer for The Shining. It's got a laundry list of credits, and you KNOW WHAT'S COMING ANYWAY. Even so — it's pretty damn scary. Part of what Kubrick did so masterfully in this movie was take his own sweet time, and make you wait. Don't worry, there's payoff. >>>NEXT: Redrum Redrum Redrum Redrum The Shining officially invented a word: Redrum. Everybody knows it's "Murder" spelled backward, and everyone also knows it looks best written in red lipstick and reflected in a mirror. Also, could a mom wake up to a more creepy sight? Very few movie people have ever looked as miserable and helpless as Shelly Duvall's character. >>>NEXT: "Heeeere's Johnny!" "Heeeeeeere's Johnny!" A classic. The classic scene from this movie, which is filled with classics. Jack Nicholson at his most iconic. I'm surprised they didn't find some way to use this in that Hillary endorsement video. >>>NEXT: The Hallway Scene Danny Meets the Grady Girls in the Hallway Someone smell oranges? The "Shining Hallway Scene" needs no more explanation — you know that it means two creepy scary girls in a hallway. It's been parodied by The Family Guy and that Verizon commercial. Poor little Danny. If only this were as bad as it got. >>>NEXT: The Hallway Scene - Family Guy The Hallway Scene - Family Guy For some reason, splicing in the actual footage makes this grosser. >>>NEXT: Jack's not gonna hurt Wendy, he's just gonna bash her brains in. "Wendy, Give Me The Bat." Wendy just doesn't understand that Jack has responsibilities. He signed a contract. >>>NEXT: Jack at the Typewriter Please Don't Interrupr Jack When He's Working This is how I feel when someone interrupts my blogging. >>>NEXT: Room 237 What's In The Bathtub? This scene terrified the hell out of me in the book. For some reason I can't find it online — the actual "oh, THAT'S in the bathtub" part. Anyone? Or did I just imagine it? It's been a while. UPDATE: Wow the power of imagination. The movie did not show the Danny-being-throttled-by-the-scary-bathtub-woman scene, though after all these years its etched into my brain. >>>NEXT: Heeeere's Homer! The Simpsons Take on The Shining A now-classic take from the Simpsons. Here, Bart reveals his special gift, and Mr. Burns takes them to the wrong floor. Bart has the "Shinning" "That's odd - usually the blood gets off at the second floor!" >>>NEXT: No work and no TV makes Homer GO CRAZY! Heeere's Homer! The 60 Minutes part is particularly brilliant. No TV and No Beer Makes Homer A Dull Boy Marge is WAY stronger than Wendy Torrance. >>>NEXT: Shining! A Family Movie The Shining Trailer...Recut This went viral a few years ago, and with good reason — damned good. The use of "Solisbury Hill" almost makes you believe that Jack and Danny are gonna work it all out. Alas. (Update: Vid is wonky; second, slightly lesser-quality version just in case.) >>>NEXT: The Fast and the Furry-ous The Shining's Furry, Furry Love It's not all redrum in The Shining. Take this scene, where Wendy happens upon a clandestine, tender love scene unfolding at the Overlook. Aw. >>>NEXT: It All Comes Back To Canada Sometimes When We Touch (And Hack Each Other With An Ax) I will admit it: I love the song "Sometimes When We Touch" by Canadian crooner Dan Hill. I even interviewed him for my college paper lo, these many years ago. So I couldn't resist a montage of scenes from The Shining paired with that song, plus the very emotive Johny Bottom. p.s. There are a few more Shining parody videos at Funny or Die, but I think this is the only one where I've actually stayed at the hotel featured. Pretty sure that's in Mt. Tremblant. Looks damn familiar. Anyone? The Shining: Final Scene The worst part of this scene is seeing Dick Halloran (Scatman Crothers) on the floor. His death scene is on YouTube (of course) but I deliberately didn't include it. That may be the worst moment of the film. In the book, he survives helps them escape. I loved Dick Halloran. But cinematically, I can see how he had to go &mdasha; amazingly by today's horror film standards, The Shining manages to make it through the movie with a body count of zero. (Ghosts excepted, obviously.) I also like how Kubrick aligned racism with the nastiness and evil of the Overlook in the bathroom scene with Jack and Grady. Anyhow, spoiler alert: They make it. Well, not everybody. >>>FINALLY: All work and no play made Jack a dull boy. The End R.I.P. Jack Torrance.
