Judge Temporarily Blocks Wisconsin Collective Bargaining Law

A Wisconsin judge has issued a temporary restraining order, blocking the new state law that curbs collective bargaining rights for most public employees. The judge, Dane County Judge Maryann Sumi, granted the restraining order after weeks of protests in Madison and the departure of a group of Democratic lawmakers from the state. The law, signed by Gov. Scott Walker, has not yet gone into effect, and the judge’s order prevents that from happening–for now.

A Democratic district attorney, Ismael Ozanne, has filed suit over the law, arguing that a legislative committee violated Wisconsin’s open meetings law.

Gov. Walker released a statement, saying “this legislation is still working through the legal process. We are confident the provisions of the budget repair bill will become law in the near future.”
