Angry Trump Emerges from Court and Declares, ‘We Are So Innocent’
An angry Donald Trump emerged from his New York criminal trial on Thursday and railed against the proceedings.
The former president has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to conceal extramarital affairs before the 2016 election. On Thursday, Judge Juan Merchan denied motions from Trump’s lawyers, who sought a mistrial and the narrowing of the gag order Merchan imposed on their client.
The gag order is designed to prevent Trump from attacking witnesses and jurors, but it does not cover the judge.
Once again, Trump availed himself of this exception after court adjourned on Thursday after Stormy Daniels resumed her testimony.
“Everybody saw what happened today,” the former president told reporters. “I don’t think we have to do any extra explaining. I’m not allowed to anyway because this judge is corrupt. He’s a corrupt judge. This judge, what he did, and what his ruling was is a disgrace.”
Trump accused Merchan of being corrupt once more and then claimed “we” did nothing wrong.
“And I got to get back onto the campaign trail,” he said, referring to his status as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. “I’m not supposed to be here. We are so innocent. There’s never been anything like it. Every single analyst, legal analyst, I’m innocent. And I’m being held in this court with a corrupt judge who’s totally conflicted. Take a look at his conflict. It’s a disgrace to the city of New York, to the state of New York, and to the country.”
With that, he turned away from reporters and declined to answer the questions some of them shouted in his direction.
