Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), current chairman of the House Rules Committee, was defeated tonight by Democratic challenger Colin Allred, ABC News now projects.

The seat adds to the House gains for Democrats, who are favored again to take control of the House by FiveThirtyEight, and was a big pick-up for Democrats in overall victories.

“This was a tossup race in the state of Texas,” noted George Stephanopoulos. “A big win for the Democrats.

Allred is a former NFL player who became a civil rights attorney. Sessions was a leader among Republicans in the House and a powerful Congressman. An expensive race, and one that Republicans were worried about for a while, that is a genuine upset for Democrats tonight.
