Biden Gets Absolutely Skewered in SNL Cold Open Packed With Teleprompter Flubs, Awkward Dodges and Foreign Policy Blunders

Saturday Night Live marked the uncertain future of panda diplomacy in their cold open about President Joe Biden’s remarks after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Mikey Day’s Biden impression kicked off the show by claiming his long-awaited meeting with his Chinese counterpart last week — whom he referred to as “Roman Numeral 11” in a brutal teleprompter gaffe — was “a total win.”

“We made agreements about communications, fentanyl, climate change, but most importantly, got the thing America really needs right now: more pandas!”

When Biden took questions from the press, the inquiries gravitated around whether he undid any progress he made in Chinese relationships by saying out loud that Xi is a dictator.

“Would you like to completely undo your accomplishments by calling him a dictator again?” A reporter asked.

“I would!” Biden replied.

Between this and other difficult topics he faced, Biden decided to draw fire away from himself by bringing out Tian Tian the giant panda (played by Bowen Yang).

“I’m honored to be here,” said Yang. “But am I the only one who was surprised that the presidents of the two biggest economies in the world met and everyone’s just like, ‘What’s up with the pandas?’”

This was a reference to China recalling three panda bears from D.C.’s National Zoo earlier this month, which means there will soon be none left in America. However, Jinping did say last week that China may send pandas back to the U.S. in the future as “envoys of friendship.”

Tian Tian’s presence immediately drew the media’s attention as reporters asked what he liked about living in America. When Biden tried to take some more questions for himself, he was confronted on the situation in the Middle East, so he decided “y’know what, I think people are really liking the panda, right? Next question!”
