With the sad closing of ‘inoteca, the first small-plates Italian restaurant to grace Manhattan’s Lower East Side, comes a boozy silver lining: earlier this week, the restaurant invited the public to come help them drink through over 1,300 deeply-discounted bottles of fine wine in its famed cellar.
In a recent post on Reddit, the restaurant’s wine director confirmed: they are deadly serious that everything must go, go, go. “I guarantee you will drink some of the greatest stuff ever pressed from a grape, and at a sinfully low price,” he boasted. “I’m talking Gaja, Dal Forno, Quintarelli, Valentini, Conterno, Giacosa, Spinetta, Soldera, Borgogno, etc…Seriously special bottles that will get repossessed if we don’t get to them first.” (A New York City law prevents restaurants from selling unopened bottles to go, which is a pretty lame law; hence, ‘inoteca needs hundreds of mouths to help them drink through the bottles by the glass. )
For anyone lucky enough to be in New York City this weekend, their white wines, rosés, and bottles under $100 are 50% off, and the discounts will only grow as the weekend wears on. Industry people get an extra 10% off their bill. ‘inoteca plans on announcing even crazier deals on their Twitter account, and the says the bacchanalia “will carry on until we close for good, with increasingly outrageous discounts.”
(Who knew that wine could be repossessed? Well, at least we now know what to invest in. Screw you, Berkshire Hathaway.)
