Roadkill Collector Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Launches Cooking Show and Warns America: ‘I Don’t Have a Gag Reflex’
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is launching a new cooking show where he will promote “real food at affordable prices” alongside celebrity chefs.
The show, titled The Real Food, was announced on Thursday through the HHS website and a promotional interview by Kennedy with USA Today. The show will drop on Kennedy’s YouTube channel.
According to HHS:
Secretary Kennedy is bringing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans to life and showing that cooking with real food can be practical, approachable, and affordable for every family. Every episode is packed with affordable, budget-friendly recipes and easy cooking techniques designed to save you time and money. Plus, you’ll get practical nutrition advice to help fuel your family, all while watching incredible special guests whip up their favorite healthy signature dishes right alongside Secretary Kennedy.
HHS said the show will primarily promote healthy meals that can mostly be made for $5 a serving.
Meals costing $5 a serving would be an impressive feat under current inflation rates.
Food prices in the US have shot up by 33% in the last seven years, which is the largest cumulative increase in food costs in five decades. According to the USDA Food Price Outlook, food costs have seen a recent increase fueled by higher transportation and gas prices. Prices were overall 3% in June of this year compared to last.
A promotional image for the series shows Kennedy with Andrew Gruel, a regular on Fox News and former Food Network judge. Chef Robert Irvine will also appear. With Gruel, Kennedy will be making a recipe for “Crispy Salmon Cakes with Apple, White Bean & Green Salad.”
While promoting the show, Kennedy warned that he will “eat anything.”
“I don’t have a gag reflex,” he notes.
The health official has certainly drawn some strong reactions to his talk about various foods in the past.
In 2024, Kennedy told reporters he has a “freezer full” of roadkill and he’s been “picking” it up his whole life.
His campaign clarified that Kennedy feeds the roadkill to his pet birds of prey.
Kennedy sticks to a diet of meats and fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi. His wife, actress Cheryl Hines, has spoken about how her husband eats steak and sauerkraut for breakfast and regularly brings his own sauerkraut to restaurants.
The new show is meant to promote new dietary guidelines that prioritize protein at every meal, full-fat dairy, vegetables, and more.
“When we published the dietary guidelines, there was immediately sort of a good reaction, but also a little trepidation from the public and from critics saying that this food is a lot more expensive than the ultra-processed food that we’ve been eating,” Kennedy explained about launching the show. “And that’s not true.”
