A Bakery Worker Says He was Fired for Refusing to Bake With Bug-Infested Flour
Eating insects may be in style, but we’re pretty sure this isn’t what they were talking about. Today in Thing That Will Make You Never Want to Purchase Food From a Restaurant Again: A bakery worker in Queens says he was fired for refusing to bake with flour that had insects in it.
According to The Daily News, Stefan Fischer, who moved from California to take a job at a Queens commercial bakery discovered that the 3,000-pound flour silo was infested with insects. Instead of getting an exterminator, his boss instructed him to use the flour for multi-grain bread, because people wouldn’t notice a little extra crunch. Ew.
Fischer claims that when he refused, he was “immediately terminated.” He’s now filed a lawsuit in Brooklyn Federal court, and is seeking reinstatement of his job, lost wages, and the $2,500 he says it cost him to move from California to New York. The bakery sells to both wholesalers as well as other bakeries. A worker at The Garden in Greenpoint didn’t seem too concerned. “They shouldn’t have used it if there were flies in the flour. But I’m sure stuff like that happens all the time,” he said.
We’re considering going low carb until we see how this plays out.
